Rich
I've not had any issues with the tyre/handling on the Civic, are you thinking of the Corolla? I was pretty chuffed I changed the caliper myself but one thing I want to do next is replace the brake fluid properly. I am going to get a one man kit and do it when I have some time next year. Tony
Yeah i was thinking of the Corolla...... Sorry to say you cannot beat a peddle bleed over a gravity bleed.
Rich
How comes? As long as there is no air left in the system what's the difference between using the two methods?
Tony
Locking the bleed nipple with the brake peddle down leaves more pressure in the system.
Rich
One of the rear light bulbs blew (brake and light) so I replaced it but I don't think I put it in the holder properly cos it fell out and into the light cluster! I can't get it out though, it's moved right into the corner. To remove the cluster I need to remove the rear bumper - what bright spark at Honda thought of that!! I need to try and find something bendy that I can get in with a lump of blu tack on the end and see if I can get it out that way.
SMARTLY
Coat hanger with blue tack or sellotape.
Tony
I have a wire claw you can use.
Rich
All of our coat hangers are plastic or wood. I'll try and find some wire to use but if I get stuck I'll take you up on that Tony
Rich
I've just remembered that bulb is still in the cluster, I had forgotten about it! I'll have to find a coat hanger and fish it out. The cambelt is due to be replaced and I got a quote from a Jap specialist who will only use genuine parts for £375. That includes the belt, pulley, spring, water pump, coolant and labour, plus the valve checking. They also give a 20k mile/2 year warranty. I had a look at the cost for genuine Honda parts and they're around £250 assuming the prices are correct, whereas a 3rd party kit is around £115 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TIMING-CAM-BELT-KIT-WATER-PUMP-HONDA-CIVIC-MK6-1-6i-01-05-D16V1-ENGINE-CODE-/380769261392?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Cars+Year%3A2002%7CCar+Make%3AHonda%7CModel%3ACivic%7CCars+Type%3A1.6&hash=item58a79dd750 The car isn't worth much now, probably £1,500 at a push and I didn't want to spend any more than £250 getting it done. I know some of you will say use genuine parts but is it worth it on a car of this age? The garage won't fit parts I supply so I'd have to find someone else to fit it as well. Does anyone know any better places to buy a cambelt kit with a water pump?
liner33
Eurocarparts , i'd fit pattern personally Re the light bulb , had exactly the same problem on my Z , sidelight bulb fell into the headlamp, to remove said headlamp involves removing the bumper and not tripping the shock sensors which trigger exploding rams in the bonnet in the event of a pedestrian impact, any interference with this system involves a dealer only reset, if the system trips its a very big bill!! . GREAT!! Cue many hours and many tries until a sticky pad on a piece of wire worked ! Very happy chap
Rich
Surprised you said that, I thought you'd go with a genuine kit. Carparts4less (ECP anyway) is more or less the same price as ebay. I'm glad I'm not the only one it's happened to with the bulb but the sticky pad is a great idea. I have some number plate ones left over, which are super sticky so that should work a treat!
liner33
There is no doubt oem is best but on a £1500 car? I need new brakes on my 09 Superb , I'll be fitting ECP ones
Rich
There is no doubt oem is best but on a £1500 car? I need new brakes on my 09 Superb , I'll be fitting ECP ones That's what I thought, if it was worth more with lower miles then I'd probably prefer to use genuine parts but I don't think it's worth it. The brakes that ECP (Pagid) sell get great reviews from Accord owners compared to the likes of EBC so when they need replacing I'll probably try them. Always been a Mintex fan but they create alot of dust. Just shows you don't always need to get the most expensive and/or genuine parts. Tony
What seems to get forgotten is the manufacturer doesn't make cars they assemble them. Pretty much all of any car part is made out of house so none OEM parts within reason are suitable. By reasonable i mean Leggo brakes wouldn't be wise nor would playdo brake lines. Rich
Looks like the cambelt isn't due as soon as I thought it was. Last done nearly 4 years ago at 69k miles and the car is on 115k, which means it's good for another 26k miles.
Tony
When you do the belt eventually are you also going to change the water pump?

Rich
You would be surprised how many people do. Yeah I know and then get an even bigger bill when it goes!
SMARTLY
If it's a keeper then usually people will change it.
Tony
To us it's a no brainer but money is tight for many so fear some will chance it
Sagitar
Do you find it surprising that so many cars still have mechanically driven water pumps?
Rich
Water pumps are cheap enough to replace though so it might as well be done.
Rich
Popped over to WIM first thing yesterday for some new front tyres, got some Uniroyal Rainexpert to match the rears, I love this tyre it's very grippy in the dry and wet. When we first got the car I thought the P6000 that were on it were ok but my opinion has changed alot since then and that's one tyre I will never buy. These used to be on the rears and worn almost to the limit but when I put them on the front the car was pulling alot to the right and the steering very heavy! Guess that shows what can happen if you swap tyres front to back? When I got home I changed the gearbox oil as that was due. No undertray to remove on this car like the Accord but the drain plug was right next to the subframe! I just managed to get my ratchet in the hole to undo it but of course when the oil comes out it hits the subframe and splashes everywhere! I drained 3L of oil out but it takes 2.7L to fill it up and it was on the max mark afterwards so it must have been overfilled. There is no dipstick tubing on the Civic, it goes straight into the gearbox so is quite low down and under the airbox! I had to remove that to get the funnel in there as I had no tubing. While that was off I gave the throttle body a clean as well. The oil was a dark red/brown colour so not black like the Accord and it had done twice the mileage! The gear change felt fine before and I think it's slightly better now, abit smoother maybe. I just need to find the source of a couple of noises now, more noticeable in the rain or with weight in the car so I think the top mounts might need replacing or the ARB bushes. The wishbones and droplinks were done within the last 2 years and the noise has been there since we've owned the car.
Tony
Reads like you are well on top of things Rich..... Knocking noise's can be a concern but don't forget there's a large void between worn and worn out.
