Rich's 2003 Honda Accord 2.4 Tourer Auto

It has a chain and I had another email from them saying that they do wear with high mileage on my engine. Plus the oil pump tensioner could be failing. So Adam might have been right but I had only read about this happening on the diesels not the petrol.

Second hand chain and tensioner is a bit risky considering the work needed to change it. Parts should be under £200 from what I've seen, I'm guessing it will be a good few hours labour though.

Rich. A new chain and tensioner plus labour was over £1500.

I had it done FOC when I had my accord as it was on a VSB.

Chains do wear.. But I know an accord that is over 300k on the factory fit chain.. But it is a taxi so sees a shed load of mileage.

Oil pump chain I would worry about too. When I spoke to the Honda tech doing the work, they had another diesel engine

In bits on the floor.

Owner had put too thick an oil in and the oil pump (which is a work of art) had broken the pump chain and therefore starved the engine of oil.

The oil pump is two balanced counter rotating shafts that spin towards each other. In each shaft there is a 90 degree cut out and these scoop and then fling the oil up. Very clever!

Well the chain, tensioner and oil chain are under £300 from Honda at rrp prices. How much labour did Honda charge for yours then! I've not looked but is there more work to do on the diesel engine compared to the petrol?

I'll have to see what's said next week but if it goes into 4 figures the car is going.

They told me at the time they dropped the engine out..

They were also changing the clutch and having the exhaust manifold changed.

So that £1,200 included the clutch and manifold too?

I'm dropping the car off tomorrow after work and they're looking on Wednesday so I'll find out then. Hopefully they can sort it, I really CBA with looking for another car ATM. Plus there's all the money I've spent on this including new summer tyres and my winter ones still have 3-4mm left too.

Had a call from the garage earlier and they've said the noise is the water pump and the engine is fine. What I don't understand is why the noise was the same with the belt removed? They've quoted £250 to replace it and I think that's using genuine parts.

They still need to find the starting issue but I think it's the starter motor, they're going to check it tomorrow. I had a job starting it last night when I took it over. It didn't crank, then something freed and I got a jolt, then it started.

I only spoke to the receptionist though so going to pop in tomorrow and check about the water pump.

I had another listen to the video with the belt on and off. With it on every now and again there is a metallic maybe grinding kind of noise that I can hear over the engine. Without the belt this disappears, so that could be the water pump. The engine is definitely noisier than it used to be so I'll try a thicker oil too.

I've not taken it to a dealer but a Jap specialist and they're highly recommended.

I popped down there earlier and he's assured me the engine is fine. He can hear some slight chain chatter but nothing to be concerned about.

The noise with the belt on is the water pump bearing, checked with a stethoscope as well and that confirmed it.

Starter motor has also gone, they tried starting it and turning off a few times and on the 3rd attempt it got stuck and started clicking.

Looking at £650-£700 to sort it all out but nearly £500 is on parts as they'll be genuine.

They're on the happy valley estate near you, never short of work down there.

Yeah it's a sod and I could do it myself but can't be bothered this time.

The starter is under the manifold and a fiddly job so they can have it to do.

They checked all the grounds and rest of the charging system and that's all fine. Price above includes £36 for diagnosing all of this too, which is very reasonable.

He said he can see it's been well looked after and I'd struggle to find another one like it now. If it lasts another 5 years after this then I'll be happy.

I had found a no name cheap one for £150. A branded one like Lucas is about £200 but as I want to keep the car for another 5 years they said go with a Honda one. The cheap ones won't last as long and for another £100 now it'll save money and time in the long run.

I said I was still concerned about the noise and how it sounds loud after a run and it's warmed up. He said he had it running for an hour in the garage while testing various parts but I'm wondering if it sitting there getting warm could make it sound quieter than after it's been driven?

Car is done but I asked them to find a knocking noise that I've been ignoring thinking it's an ARB bush. I just get a knocking over bumps but they said it's the ball joint and is quite bad now.

Told them to sort it out while they've got the car, another £160. It's in the knuckle so more of a pain to change.

Credit card is getting a right caning this month! Fingers crossed nothing else needs doing.

I think half the problem is I tend to buy older cars so parts are at the end of their life and it's just unfortunate that so many things have gone at the same time.

I've just picked the car up, I have really missed it and enjoyed the drive home :D

It was the ball joint on the upper wishbone that had gone, it was nearly ready to pop out! Both arms were done in 2011 before I bought the car and they've only done 30k miles so they must've been cheap parts. There is still a slight knocking though and they've spent hours trying to find it with no success, so he thinks it's the internals of the shock absorber. Looks like I'll be replacing those in the new year but it should be an easy job compared to the pinch bolts on the Mondeo!!

He said there's no concerns with the engine and it should last forever, they're bulletproof, so I hope he's right.

Cost me £820 to get everything done on top of the £150 I spent on the other parts a few weeks a go. Expensive month!
