adam_r
Rich. Does the noise change when revved? That sounds like the timing chain has stretched.
NickT
Take the belt of and run the engine briefly ie no more then 2 to 3 minutes (do this at your own risk etc. ) If the noise disappears then the problem is with the bearings etc in the belt driven area. If the noise still exists then unfortunately it's within the engine. Good luck. I hope it's with the belt end. Btw if you were nearby I'd recover the gas and recharge it for you in exchange for a detail, but I think traveling up north would be too far for you... liner33
Rich. Does the noise change when revved? That sounds like the timing chain has stretched. Chains can't stretch , if the timing chain was loose the noise would be different and worse when starting up
Rich
I haven't tried seeing if the noise changes when the engine is revved, I will have to do that. I had a listen before I went to work after just starting the car and it didn't sound too bad. When I got to work 15 minutes (5 miles) later I had another listen and that metal grinding noise was louder (but not as much with the new idler pulley) so it definitely seems worse when hot. That was going to be my next question, could I run the engine with the belt off as this also drives the water pump. As the noise is worse when it's hot should I go for a drive first then remove the belt or is this more risky than doing it from cold? I would only need to run it for less than 30 seconds to know or not.
liner33
Yes it will be ok for a short time
Rich
I'll have a go on Friday then and see if it's still there - then I can faff around for 30 minutes trying to get the belt back on!
Rich
I've not had time to take the belt off yet but I'm still having starting issues and getting annoyed with the car now, everything seems to be happening at once! The missus used it yesterday and said it wouldn't start the first time, it was very cold and frosty in the morning. It started the second time and was fine for the rest of the day. I'm using it today (frosty again) and the car didn't even turn over the first time, then the 3 yellow lights came on (ABS, warning, VSA). The second time there was a clunk and something felt like it was stuck and had freed up, the 3rd time it started. So I'm now thinking the starter motor might be playing up. So I might need a new starter now, plus the other noise in the engine bay and then there's a knocking from the front somewhere
Tony
Is yours an auto? If not put it in 2nd and rock the car back and forth then try to start it again.
Rich
Yep it's an auto and the starter is in a location where you can't hit it, under the manifold! I'll check all of the wiring and terminals to make sure they're ok but I think I'll just have to take it to the garage and get everything sorted. Or px it!! Tony
Would you px it really?
Rich
In good condition it's probably worth £1,500 max for a private sale, how it is I reckon £500 px. Trouble is I've just spent £150 on new parts and £200 on new tyres the other month so I don't really want to get rid of it. If the compressor pulley is making that noise then a new one is over £250, starter is over £100, then whatever is causing the knock, possibly ARB bushes. I really need someone to look at it and tell me what's wrong before I decide what to do but I reckon I'm looking at another £500+.
liner33
did you check all the earths last time ?
Rich
No only the battery one which looks ok so I need to do that, if I can find them all. Would the battery clamps benefit from a clean?
liner33
A poor connection would explain a lot of the issues you have been having so i would clean up every one you can find
Rich
I'll have a look then. Just got home from work and the car started first time with no hesitation so something didn't like the cold the last 2 mornings.
Rich
Doesn't sound good, I had a listen to some bottom end noises and it's very similar! Although it's noisier with the belt fitted, it's still there after removing it.
adam_r
Oohhh is that your car in the bud? Deffo a mechanical twang in there. I would be tempted to drop the oil and do some fishing.. See if any deposits are present.. Certainly sounds like the start of a knock
Rich
Yes that's my car in the video, doesn't sound good does it! I did the oil change 4 months a go and although I wasn't looking for deposits I don't remember seeing anything. I also don't remember this noise after doing the change as I would've warmed the engine after filling to check the level. I'm hoping to take it to a garage tomorrow and get a diagnosis but I'm already looking for a replacement. I can't see it being good news or cheap repair! liner33
Its so hard to tell noises like this i'm sure a garage will be able to pinpoint it , as i said some thicker oil might help you get you a few more months even if its terminal
Rich
I wasn't looking for a diagnosis on here, just showing the difference (or lack of) in noise with the belt on and off. Definitely engine related though. I'm waiting for the garage to let me know when I can take it down there. If it's terminal then I'll have to cut my loses and sell it for spares. So annoying when I've spent quite a bit making sure it'll last a few more years. I, like all of us on here make sure my cars are looked after, yet I seem to get the worse luck compared to those who don't!
liner33
if its bottom end you really need to try an oil change , some engines will quiet right up with some thicker oil it has to be worthwhile for £50-£
Rich
I'll see what the garage says but if it is this then I'll try some thicker oil. What would happen if I just left it and used the car as normal?
liner33
it would just get worse and worse , unlikely just to fail though
Tony
And i thought the engine was bullet proof
Rich
They can't see it until Wednesday next week so will find out then hopefully what the actual problem is.
