Can you provide any further references Tony - I'm interested to know where this comes from. As far as I am aware, malathion is a kind of pesticide that was banned in the UK and the EU some time ago. However, I think that in the US and Canada it may still be used to kill fruit flies and other pests on major fruit crops - dispensing the pesticide over wide areas from helicopters.

Is it just coincidence that this cloud formation has a similar name, or is there some connection?

Good questions, I tried Googling these clouds but all it came back with was chemicals! If this photo is genuine then I assume it's been caused by man with this pesticide rather than by nature itself.
