Rich
As title really, how do you normally check this?
Gordon
Feel the rubber pipes before and after it when you 1st start up from cold, hot should go one way,so pipe will get hot, and other pipe should stay cold until it opens or take it out and put it in hot water then cold water
liner33
Put it in very hot water , they normally open around 88 degrees but if in doubt change it , they are cheap enough and the new one with come with a gasket which you need anyhow
Tony
As Gord said, once warm the rubber pipe out of the stat should be the same temp as the one in.
Rich
Cheers, will check that then and yeah they are cheap enough so might get a replacement anyway.
liner33
As Gord said, once warm the rubber pipe out of the stat should be the same temp as the one in. Â wont tell you if its stuck open
Rich
Would the stat being faulty affect the temperature guage?
Tony
In what way?
adam_r
Would the stat being faulty affect the temperature guage? Â nope. there is a coolant temp sensor which is normally on the ouput of the block on the coolant line. they are common to go and again are very cheap to replace. Rich
In what way? Â As in not working. Â Would the stat being faulty affect the temperature guage? Â nope. there is a coolant temp sensor which is normally on the ouput of the block on the coolant line. they are common to go and again are very cheap to replace. Â I'll have to find out where it is and if the motor factors do them.
Tony
That will be the temperature sender, not the stat.
Rich
Yep someone else just said that as well, I'll have to test it and then get a new one. If the car overheats and the engine goes pop I don't think me brother will be too happy! That's how my old MK4 Escort died! <_>
Tony
They are cheap as chips and easy to fit.
Rich
Just over a tenner on ebay but been advised to buy genuine as the pattern ones don't last long.
Tony
How much is a genuine one.
Rich
Don't know, need to find out.
adam_r
do buy genuine. i had a cheap motor factor temp sensor and it worked for about a week!. Â follow the coolant line to the block, there should be a plastic insert in to the block, and normally the temp sensor is connected in there. btw dont pull it out when the engine is warm! i found that one out! liner33
To test the sender just short out the feed the gauge should read max
Rich
Yep been told to do that as well <_>
CIH
Would the stat being faulty affect the temperature guage? Â If it's stuck open it would take the car unusually long to get up to temperature. Or, as with my Silvia, it would never get above one quarter warm/
Rich
Might be worth fitting a new stat anyway...I'll check the sender first though.
SMARTLY
Check the wire hasn't come off the sender.
Rich
The sender and wire were covered in oil, rocker cover is leaking. Cleaned it up and tested the wire, it works fine. Gonna see tomorrow if cleaning the oil has helped, if not I'll get a new sender, thermostat and rocker cover gasket.
Rich
Well new sender fitted and it's working now, £20 it cost me, it's a tiny little thing as well! Didn't get time to fit the stat, I need to remove the distributor, 3 hoses and unbolt the housing so I'll do that in a couple of weeks. Also fitted the new rocker cover gasket and sealed it in so hopefully no more leaking oil!
adam_r
Always nice to have a relatively easy fix
