The Bilt Hamber Treatment

Got some Detox Gel, Hydrate 80 and Dynax S50 to help sort some rust and protect the car

I wanted to sort this bit that's creeping into the sill and a scrape on the arch. See how I get on with these as this is the first kind of body work I've done. If I'm happy with the results I will do all of the arch lips, both sides, the other sill is ok.

The Detox Gel is used to remove the rust. Hydrate 80 is a rust killer/protector and the Dynax is like waxoyl for doing under the arches and if I've got enough I'll do the underneath of the boot as well.

The gel is covered with clingfilm for at least 12 hours so it can work it's magic. Hopefully I've applied it correctly, will find out tomorrow! :)

I need to do this kind of thing with the Silvia too. There are loads of odd spots of surface rust here and there that need doing before it rots.

Are you sure you needed the gel ? I thought the rust neutraliser/convertor would have been enough ?

Yeah that's why I'm doing this now, don't fancy paying out to have new sills welded in. Hopefully it will add a few more years to it anyway.

The gel removes the rust and the hydrate 80 acts as a rust remover/barrier system. So with this you would scrape away any loose rust, apply this and then primer/paint etc. With the gel you keep applying/removing it until there is nothing but clean bare metal showing. As it's the sill I would rather go this route and make sure it's all gone

What an interesting product.... I didn't know it existed?

Me neither, does look interesting, look forward to the results

Will take some more photos once the cling film comes off tomorrow after work. I will probably have to put another coat on and then I can spend the weekend painting it.

Never heard of that stuff, i always used to use Jenolite gel rust remedy on my rusty minis? good stuff too :D

Might be worth a coat of waxoil inside the sills too if you can get into them matey? :)

Got a big job like that to do on my skyline soon, going to redo the underseal and paint all the metalwork under the car? ;)

The company is popular on detailing world which is where I read about them.

Can't get into the sills but the Dynax S50 would be the thing to use :)

I'm tempted to do the underneath but that will wait till next year now.

Went out for a peak an hour ago and you can see the metal turning silver already :)

Busy day today...

I've put the 3rd application of Detox Gel on this afternoon, same thickness as the first 2. The sheet that came with it said 4mm thickness so I have been aiming for this. I've since found out I should be applying it so thick you can't see the rust through it on this type of corrosion...so I will be redoing it again tomorrow but it's getting there

The metal where the scrape is has now turned silver :) I've applied some Hydrate 80 to this and will give it 24 hours to dry before painting over it. I applied 2 coats, within 30 minute intervals.

I've also used it on some interior bits, which I've not painted over as I don't think it needed it. The rust inside was from leaks I've had and the car is 9 years old so it's done well anyway.

Now for the photos

That looks impressive stuff. I'd be inclined to put something over the inner stuff unless what you are using leaves a protective coat. You have a fair bit of rust there for a nine year old car ( even a Mondeo ).

The Hydrate 80 also acts as a rust barrier, obviously painting over it would make it last longer.

I'm not sure why I have that much rust in the sill, the other side doesn't have any!

lol, dude it's a Ford......

Shut it you! :smile_anim: Mondeo's aren't that bad for rusting actually, unlike the escort! :D

Another update ;)

I applied the gel ALOT thicker this time and WOW what a difference that made! :P

Most of the rust has gone now, I noticed a few loose bits that I couldn't remove with a scouring pad so used the grinding stones I bought. I only have a cordless cheap drill so it didn't remove much but made a difference.

I'm going on holiday Saturday morning so I need to apply the Hydrate 80 tomorrow after work. At least it will be protected until I can paint it when I get back.

At least I know that to get quicker results apply it alot thicker. Found some more rust spots along the arches so will be sorting those as well :tongue2:

Photo time!

Cheers mate :tongue2:

It's not too much work TBH, 10 minutes every other day to clean the gel off, wash, reapply and cover with cling film.

I was going to spray it today but will leave it till Thursday as got all the unpacking to do from our holiday!

Took a couple of photos before I went away, this is before I applied the Hydrate 80. I may take it off and apply some more gel though as I'm not sure all of the corrosion has gone, the black bits left could be paint but then again they could be rust! I'm getting the primer/paint/clearcoat tomorrow and will start the spraying before it gets too cold :angry2:

Its/you've done a great job mate

You'll probably find after a good sand down most of the black bits will go, leaving you a nice clean surface to work with?

I painted over the metal with the Hydrate 80 before I went away so it wasn't just bare metal. I'm hoping the black bits were just paint that hadn't been removed, it was smooth to the touch so hopefully weren't rust.

Got the paint today and used the primer, leaving it until Saturday morning and then will paint over that and the clearcoat can go on Sunday. I'm not too sure what to do with the scrape as that was down to the metal and I just keyed the paint around it. I may apply the paint abit thicker in that area and then rub it down so it's all even

I'm happy with the progress I've made so far :(
