parthiban
Got back yesterday to find the Merc looking like this - has the front suspension collapsed? Haven't had a chance to jack it up yet but considering it's been sitting still for 2 weeks and was absolutely fine beforehand, any ideas as to what could have happened? adam_r
Spring has probably broken
parthiban
Spring has probably broken Can that just happen? The car was only recently serviced too so wouldn't they have spotted it if it was about to go?
Rich
What a pain! Looks cool slammed though!
parthiban
Haha did get me thinking about getting it lowered - looks a bit ridiculous right now though, like a hot rod slammed at the front and high at the rear
liner33
My springs broke on my w210 , also the spring perches corroded
parthiban
My springs broke on my w210 , also the spring perches corroded Hmm so something that can happen, thankfully corrosion is much improved on the CLS (W219) but I should jack it up and see what's going on underneath. Tony
Isn't it on air suspension?
parthiban
Isn't it on air suspension? Ours is actually on springs, not on air. And it's definitely a broken spring as in the pic below. Can this just happen Tony? Bit scary to think I had the car on the motorway the day before we flew out, and if this had happened at motorway speed I'm guessing it may have been a one way ticket to the central reservation. adam_r
Can you get a close up of the exposed metal? Looks like a manufacturing defect (crack) that has enlarged and rusted then finally broken.
liner33
Heavy cars Mercs and its a common problem , not expensive to sort either . Never noticed mine breaking to be honest , just noticed the car sat low , not that that low though

Never noticed mine breaking to be honest , just noticed the car sat low , not that that low though Do you normally replace both sides at the same time or will it be ok to just replace the broken spring? Yep the spring has dropped right down which is why it looks to be basically sitting on the bump stop.
liner33
Both sides , you should always do both sides

Rich
Any suspension parts should be replaced in pairs
Gordon
Seen this lots of times at my mates garage with Mercs, the smaller one's are really bad
SHAHZ
Same thing happened on my brother in laws E class, think that was just sat on the drive at the time too
Tony
Yes they do/ can just snap, what's odd about your one is where it snapped? Normally a pig tailed coil brakes the last helix because the coil has a progressive rate.
parthiban
Fair enough, if that's 3 on similar Mercs just on the forum I guess it's a fairly common thing! Still need to get the car booked in to get it sorted - trying to decide whether to send it in to Merc and try and argue for a free replacement or just get it done locally (which I'm guessing will be a lot cheaper if they don't end up paying out)
Tony
MB won't do it for free trust me.
parthiban
MB won't do it for free trust me. It was in for a service a week before this happened - would there have been anything visible if this was about to happen? They also replaced the brakes - could I argue they damaged it when the wheels were off?

Tony
There's no visible signs of metal fatigue so as much as i would like to say they missed it, externally there was nothing to miss.
