adam_r
Veyr common. A mate works at a local audi garage and this happened to them. In total 30 cars wheels where taken and where left dumped on the floor.. Basically meaning that they all had to get repaired before they could then try to re-sell them
parthiban
How did they take all of them without alerting attention? Wouldn't all the car alarms have been going off, which I'm assuming would subsequently set off some other alarm in the garage to alert the police? adam_r
They entered the dealership car park (bit that is like an outdoor showroom) and used a load of easy off tools to remove the locking wheel nuts. A gang of 12 of them managed to do all the cars, and load the wheels up in just under 45 minutes.no alarms where set off as they did not break in to them or jolt them sufficiently. I have seen the cct footage and they work perfectly as a team. Per car: 2 where doing the jacking ( one either side) 2 where doing the wheels 1 was loading the wheels. So two of the above managed to strip 15 cars each in around 22 minutes. All wheels where loaded in to un livered white vans with their tax and plates removed
Rich
Wow Maybe they should clamp them or fit alarms that sound when the cars are lifted. Someone did that to my Dad's car years ago but just with one wheel, they left it sitting on the brake disc.
Tony
If they can remove the locking wheel nuts i shouldn't think a wheel clamp would stop them, slow them down maybe yes.
parthiban
I was thinking of how the alarm goes off when you jack the car, but I assume that's on a tilt switch so if you jack all four corners at the same time then the alarm doesn't go off. Tony
Well they seem to have off to a fine art.
liner33
Local Volvo garage had this done to them so they invested in a CCTV system . The thieves came back a few weeks later this time wearing comedy masks and nicked the lot again
Rich
I know of someone who had their custom made Range Rover nicked from outside their house in Chelsea, they had only had it for 3 months. No doubt it got stripped and loaded into a container within hours. Maybe showrooms need to start employing security guards.
Tony
Clamp the wheels.
SMARTLY
Fit better alarms.
Tony
I assume what they have complies with insurance requirements but whatever it's not enough.
parthiban
It's the trade off between being sensitive enough and not going off all the time though - if they are smart enough to gently jack up all 4 corners together, it'll be hard for an alarm to detect that. A garage forecourt is a bit silly though, should have better security on site.
SMARTLY
Just looked up Thatcham Cat 1 alarm on RAC and it says as well as perimeter, tilt sensor and immobiliser it should have siren with it's own battery - didn't think mine had that last bit. Tony
I would think they undid the wheel nuts and removed the locking nut with the wheels on the ground so how come the vibration didn't set off the alarm?
