Coilover V Shock/Springs

Hi,

My shocks are knocking on my STI and they have already been replaced under warranty 3 times previous over the past 18 months(Weak point on the car). Now, I am not going back to pay this time to have the same shocks replaced again and this time being charged as the car is now out of warranty.

So - time to upgrade. I have been reading up about all the various kits/fitments/packages but what i want is something that is:

1. Still comfortable as a daily drive

2. Lowers the car slightly

3. No noise or knocking!

I have seen various coilover packages but advised they need to be serviced, maintained, and possibly too bumpy for our lovely roads

I have seen shock and spring packages but for the cost the coilovers seem better value as the shocks/springs work out more.

What is the difference between a shock/spring combo and a coilover?

What would you suggest as a daily driver?

Brands such as Tein and BC come to mind for the coilovers and kyb/tein/eibach for the shock/spring combo.

Any help or suggestions feel free to comment!

(P.S) I had eibachs and apex shocks on my old MX5 and that handled a treat :)

Cheers :o

From my understanding mate coilovers are very hard so with your 18s the ride could be abit too harsh. When I've been in the car I find it quite a firm ride already.

Problem is the standard STI shocks are made by KYB which you can get as OEM replacements, however I dont want anythign to knock again in 6 months as I beleive the KYB's will!

Guess I am used to the ride now, dont think I would want it much harder than it is - you know what the lanes are like :s

How about going for Bilstein dampers and Eibach springs matey they are meant to be a great combo......

hi, Thanks...

Just googled it and it seems the RB320 and all prodrive upgraded STI's are supplied with this fitment (blistein/eibachs)

Lowers the car by 20mm also. Seems like a good combo from the reviews combined with the following geo settings:

Camber: Front Rear

Max equal negative not adjustable

Toe-in 1mm 1mm

Definately worth looking into.

Can WIM supply/fit the kit above? :o

I was thinking about when you drive to Scotland. You'd have a dead arse by the time you get there! :o

Also with coilovers being so hard, when you hit a pothole I think the wheel will take more of the impact so there's more chance of getting a buckle.

Im sure they could but it might be better if you got the springs & dampers yourself TBH........i was going to get the Bilstein dampers for my car from the site below as ive got the same problem the Lexus ones are made by KYB and my drivers side knocks like a good "n"...

They do the Bilstein dampers for your scooby mate..and also other bits like the Eibach springs, ARB`s etc...just click to open the bilstein website to get the codes you need for the Dampers....

Coilovers are the way to go in regards to price. Ideally what you need is adjustable height, pre-load, bump and rebound. This combination is idiot proof and easily tuned.

PM me your index number to identify the chassis and i will get you some options.

coilovers come in different settings

the TTE coilovers i have on the lexus are very comfortable and very easy to live with

however the starlets coilovers are very harsh, and not practicle for everyday use

different spring rates are normally available dependant on their intended use

Thanks for the replies :)

PM Sent Tony. What are BC coilovers like? Never heard of them until last week...

Also - to answer the question then, I guess coilvers are better value for money? What about the servicing on them?

BC coilovers are a new one on me?.... subject to the full name :)

In truth mate the servicing shouldn't be an issue assuming the valving's not something stupid like 42 way.

The EVO and Scooby clubs seem to be raving about them but like I said ill take advice from yourself :)

30 way adjustable :) ..... Bump this and droop that, it's to much unless touring car is your destination!..... Earlier in this thread you mentioned "servicing" the coils, these type of coils are high maintenance because they offer exemplary high suspension dynamics that you would never use. Back track a little and look at your real needs?

Indeed - hence Ill wait for your call. Even the missus asked why I would want 30 damper settings and up to a 90MM drop :)

Gadgets though eh... :)

-90mm=whole can-O-worms.... Unless we are talking 100% track use :)

A guy on the escort forums from a few years ago dropped his 100mm! :) Looked great but not very practical!

So what's the ideal number of damper settings for road use?

Impossible to answer since the topic is opinionated, i would say 24 bump/rebound is good for most tuners.
