Tony
I have seen plenty of explosions - but cannot recall seeing one as big as the one that happened in Beirut.
SMARTLY
2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in the port of Beirut and it would seem there may have been a fire nearby that set it off
Viking
Apparently they're looking for the people responsible. Well for me the people responsible are the f**kwits who thought it was a safe idea to store that much high explosive material in a warehouse in the middle of the capital. What on earth were they thinking?
Geoffers
Been stored there since 2013 allegedly. There story goes that a ship bound for Mozambique was diverted there due to mechanical issues. It was abandoned after there were some other issues and it was held at the port and the company went bust. The ammonium nitrate was offloaded and stored temporarily. Letters had been sent looking for other places to store it but were ignored. Could all be bullpoo and we'll hear 19 other stories by the end of the week. If true, you would have thought it would have been used or got rid of after a short time.
Rich
Absolutely crazy, I couldn't believe the explosion, it was very surreal watching it. Seems mad to store all of those explosives though.
Tony
Some time back there was a ship transporting ammonium nitrate that was docked awaiting unload. It exploded killing 100's of people.my point is the ship was blown out of the water and ended up 100yds inland.

Tony
Horrible... And so many dead for no reason...... Someone is going get their arse kicked but it won't bring back those who died.
Rich
Is there rubble left from the buildings or have they completely gone so the area is empty? I assume most of it has gone in the water too.
Tony
Why are people attacking the police?
Geoffers
1 hour ago, Tony said: Why are people attacking the police? They are protesting due to years of government neglect. They sent the police straight in with tear gas and other in heavy handed tactics allegedly. The environmental and information ministers have resigned. Tony
I see...... I have to say it's mad having that sort of chemicals in the middle of town?
JamesV70R
Politics and beaurocracy! They weren't allowed to sell it, and it couldn't be moved from where it was unloaded to when originally confiscated. It had likely been a ticking time bomb since the original unloading, but paperwork got in the way again and again, eventually leading to the explosion. I don't imagine we'll see a full impartial investigation, but at most someone will lose their job - that won't help the 300k+ people who were affected in some way. Tony
The fact they could hold such volatile stock says it all.
Geoffers
From Sky News. Lebanon's Prime Minister Hassan Diab and the country's entire government has resigned after the deadly Beirut blast that killed at least 160 people. In a brief televised speech, Mr Diab said he is taking "a step back" so he can stand with the people "and fight the battle for change alongside them". He said: "I declare today the resignation of this government. May God protect Lebanon."
Tony
Seems there's more into responsibility by the government then we understood.
Geoffers
Relinquishing any responsibility. They walk away and leave others to clean up. They needed change there yes, but now would have been a time to step up, sort the issues then fairly vote a new government in. The place will be in a worse state for some time, especially as Covid is bad there too.
