Viking
Well, tonight was fun. Popped over to Mother In Laws house about 2 miles away to let the cat in and lock everything up. On the way there I felt a bit of a thump on the front end. Thought nothing of it other than "What was that?" and went to do the business. Came back out of the house, looked at the front wheels and I have a flat tyre. So, in the dark and cold, changed the tyre for the spare, got back home and had a close look. Split in the sidewall where I caught something. Bloody marvelous. Only done about a thousand miles on the new winter tyres as well.
Tony
Not good news...... Very odd type of damage though, it almost looks like it was slashed?
SMARTLY
I'd be going back along the root looking for a pothole and compensation
Tony
"Compensation" there's no chance of that...
Viking
No potholes along the route. If I'd hit a pothole I'd be claiming, but I didn't.
Tony
Pothole damage is a tyre getting pinched between the impact and the rim meaning the cut on your tyre is at the wrong angle to be a pinch.....
Rich
That's a bugger, maybe you ran over something that caused the cut but didn't feel it.
Viking
I did feel it though, but I didn't see anything at the time which could've caused it.
Viking
Well, that's not good. The tyres are no longer available, so I'll have to replace it with something else.
Tony
Isn't there a next model made by the manufacture?
Viking
Yes, the Wintrac Xtreme S, but the tread pattern is different and I keep all my tyres the same. I can cope with two the same on one axle, but I wouldn't have just an odd one. So I'll have to buy two and keep one as a spare or sell it on. Tony
Are you sure you have checked every lead for another one.
Viking
I've checked all my usual online suppliers yes. The only place who mention them are showing them as on back order and cost over £145 when in stock. The new profile tyres can be had for £80 a corner delivered so I'm not banking on waiting for the old ones coming back into stock at that price. Local tyre fitter has also drawn a blank from his suppliers.
Tony
Oh well, really bad luck but time to move on i suppose.
Viking
Well, it doesn't get any better here. This was the van rear near side tyre this morning.
Rich
Has that been done on purpose, looks like a clean cut?
Viking
No, I was driving when it happened, didn't hit anything, just a pop and a hiss and straight flat.
NickT
Putting things into perspective, at least it was just a tyre and there is no other damage done. My grandad used to say that fixing metal and rubber is always easier than flesh and bone
Rich
No, I was driving when it happened, didn't hit anything, just a pop and a hiss and straight flat. Strange - was it the same route you were driving?
Tony
Nasty cut and looks due to metal rather than glass, glass tends to remain in the tyre...
parthiban
That's a nasty cut - and looks like such a clean split. Is that caused by something cutting it or a tyre failure?
Viking
No, I was driving when it happened, didn't hit anything, just a pop and a hiss and straight flat. Strange - was it the same route you were driving? No, first time I was less than a mile from home, this was about 20 miles away.
Rich
They look like cuts but for it to happen to 2 tyres in the space of a week in different locations seems like a big coincidence?
Tony
Pure chance methinks..... The van tyre cut is typical of a sharp object like metal/ glass but i think metal and the car tyre is typical blunt compression trauma like a stone in the road, side of a pothole, kerb.
