adam_r
I would love an alloy wheel..but i bet everything there will fetch mega bucks
Tony
We have a rear F1 wheel at the centre which we made into a coffee table.
parthiban
I'd love a steering wheel but they're always far too expensive
Tony
Well it would be an investment mate.
parthiban
Well it would be an investment mate. Not sure how much a Caterham or Marussia wheel would be worth - a Ferrari/McLaren/Merc wheel on the other hand
Tony
Well yes..... Still a nice centrepiece though.
S2IM
Dammit. Just ordered some coilovers from Joe. If I knew this was happening I would have held of
Tony
Nah they would have been to highly spring....... Anyhoo what make of coilovers did you go for in the end?
S2IM
The tried and tested approach. BC Such a shame these guys went under. I was lucky enough to spend the day with them at Silverstone a couple of years back with full hospitality. The tech involved was immense. They were all really good chaps as well and I hope they found employment within the other teams.
liner33
My mate had a 1980's f1 wheel on his dragbike , was made of magnesium rather than aluminium
Tony
I bet that was an interesting fit?
liner33
We machined it and made a hub , I spent the afternoon setting light to the swarf with my lighter I'll find a pic Had a look but most of my pics for the bike are like this
Viking
I was gonna say, I'm not sure magnesium is a good material to have on a machine if it catches fire (from my memory of school classroom larking about).
liner33
Yep burns with an intense White flame , probsbly outlawed now for that reason
adam_r
Pure magnesium is far too soft.. It is always alloyed with something. When it is in its alloyed state it is much more stable. Hence magnesium alloys etc
andyelcomb
Yep, magnesium was banned in single seater cockpits a long way back because once properly alight you can't readily extinguish it. Still ok for outside components though but as said above probably more of an alloy these days for better strength yet still light weight. Tony
So are modern F1 wheels an alloy composite?
parthiban
Aren't F1 wheels still a magnesium alloy?
Tony
That's what i'm wondering because of the fire risk/ burn.
parthiban
That's what i'm wondering because of the fire risk/ burn. As Adam said once in alloy form they're more stable. Quite a few Ferrari road cars have magnesium alloy wheels as well.
Tony
Well the mix is better for the unsprung weight...
