oil filters

does size matter ?

is it bigger is better ......or not <_<

looking at the starlet filter and its pretty small

I think it's fairly safe to assume that Mr Toyota has designed the standard filter to be big enough, but a larger filter will certainly be less restrictive.

It may be worth while considering an oil cooler/thermostat/filter relocation/larger filter package.

Slightly off topic I know, bu if you do install the above package, make sure that you connect the oil lines the correct way around ;). We had a really nice Supra in last week that had a remote oil filter kit installed by a "Supra Specialist". The engine seized up on the motorway so was towed to us. Upon inspection we discovered that the oil lines were connected up incorrectly (pressurising the one way valve in the oil filter the wrong way - causing greatly reduced oil pressure :D). Oddly enough the installer also fitted an oil pressure meter at the same time and told the customer that he had low oil pressure but evidently didn't think to inspect his own work.

Here's a picture of the offending item. Can you would out why it all went wrong?

If you look at the pipes they have been connected the opposite way on the filter side compared to where the filter would normally be. I gather that should be the other way round? So the centre pipe runs from centre to centre with the pipe to one side going to the pipe to one side on the filter, rather than crossing them over as it is there.

ther reason i asked was because i am fitting an oil cooler/thermostat/filter relocation package, and rather than use the little filter thought a bigger one would be better, with less restriction on space it kind of makes sense

so thats good to know ;)

i think mr toyota also had problems with the space for the original filter, dont think he could of put it in a worse position !!, the best access was by dropping the air con compressor down and then attacking it from underneath

That's right. The oil comes out of the pump into the outside of the filter, through the filter then out of the inside of the filter to the engine.

In the picture I posted you can see that the hose from the outside of the sandwich plate to the inside of the remote filter housing, then from the outside of the remote filter housing to the inside of the sanwich plate. Good bye oil pressure and engine <_<

On the 3S-GE it seems most "experts" are recommending to use the 3S-GTE filter as it's slightly longer .....

What about the difference between using normal engine oil and fully synthetic? would i be correct in thinking that normal oil would block up the filter faster than fully synthetic due to less impurities in synthetic ?

Word of warning... becoming very important to purchase your filters from main dealers as counterfeit oil filters are rampant...

Toyota had a big poster up showing a real filter and a fake one and they were identical so Toyota had no choice but to change the part no.

They are not identical on the inside, have seen a picture of another brand fake and it looked like it had tissue paper inside...SEE HERE!

my replacement filter only cost €11 euro so getting one off ebay for a few quid less would have be crazy....

It's scary that something so small and inexpensive could potentially cause so much damage.

  • 1 month later...

Ive got a halfords one its a bit odd tho becasue you can use it on a 1.3 starlet a 2 litre Celica and a 3 litre Supra this i thought was werid as its pretty small and there alot of difference in the engine sizes. Ive got it on my car at the moment and it seems ok LOL

Some cars have magentic oil sump or oil sump nuts so that they collect the metal bits and bobs :( mates punto had bits of his turbo fins in it HAHAHAHA
