Tony
Can't quite believe the driver would tow his new purchase with a Rav4, apparently he was taking it to Spain> http://www.gazetteandherald.co.uk/news/13330974.Snaking_Roller_comes_to_grief_on_the_A350/?ref=mr&lp=
eddie
No wonder he came a cropper; surely that is miles over the tow limit for a RAV? Doesn't a Rolls weigh over two tons??
Rich
Fail!
Tony
More like three tons i think eddie...
parthiban
Wow! Got to be 2 tonnes minimum and that's excluding the trailer - way over the limit for a RAV4!
Rich
I've never towed anything before, what determines the weight it can pull - The drivetrain and what power the car has? What could've caused the trailer to flip, the RAV braked and the heavy load fishtailed before overturning?
Viking
Towing weights are dictated by the manufacturers at the time of design. There's the shed dragger society who seem to think that they can calculate the towing capacity for themselves with a percentage of the vehicles weight, but the definitive answer to "How much can I tow? is "Ask the manufacturers or look in your handbook!" If you stay below the manufacturers specification then you're unlikely to end up i this scenario where the insurance company just say "Sorry mate, we're not paying out because you're stupid!" Tony
The tow eye becomes a pivot point as weight transfers.
eddie
It gets worse - no insurance on the Rolls as well http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/11686259/Runaway-Rolls-Royce-ends-up-on-its-roof.html He would have been better off just driving the Rolls to Spain; it would have done it without any trouble
Viking
Even if it was insured they wouldn't pay out. He wasn't towing it with a suitable vehicle legally, so they would just refuse the claim.

Tony
Oh i agree not only with the weight but not knowing the insurance wasn't valid.
parthiban
Looked like the Rolls was in pretty good condition so can't have been cheap - can't see why you wouldn't just pay for professional transport! Particularly when you don't have a suitable tow vehicle..........
Tony
Money....... Cost me £185 to move the Lambo 30 miles on a flatbed.
parthiban
But when the car is nice surely it's worth it. The issue in this case was that the trailer started snaking and then threw the car off - so it clearly wasn't even restrained.
Tony
Again i agree, it's not like it was an old snotter so why risk it?
