Rich
I need to get myself on of these mini quadcopters they look fun. Did you make that one from scratch and not a kit? I'm impressed
SMARTLY
So the copter is quite big then compared to the palm of the hand size ones, will it be more difficult to fly?
Rich
Depends if it has gyro or not, that's what makes most of these models easy to fly now.
adam_r
The hubsan x4 is around 95mm diagonally from motor to motor centre. The big one is 250mm. The hubsan has gyros but you cant turn them off only down.with the big one it does have a flight controller but you can turn them totally off which is a werid experience. If you turn off the gyros and angle the copter forward at 30 degrees it will stay at that angle until you correct it.
adam_r
Also apart from the size different size and knowledge that it will do serious damage if you hit someone.. Its really bo different from the hubsan
adam_r
Smarty.i would always advise someone to get a micro quad first they are about £20 on amazon now. They are a very good introduction in to how quads fly and what you can do with them.. And they are pretty robust and very cheap to fix. With the 250carbon quad things happen faster and will be more expensive to fix
SMARTLY
Sounds like good advice, maybe I need the "toy" one first.
Tony
Seriously how easy are these to fly?..... I bought a helicopter some time back and could i fly it, could i fryer tuck!!!.....
Rich
That helicopter was terrible, even my uncle couldn't get it to fly for more than 5 seconds and he's very good, owns a model shop. My Dad has a DJI Phantom, now they are awesome!
Tony
Oh good so it wasn't just me then.
Rich
You need one with gyro, much easier to control.
Tony
Do RC helicopters come with a giro then?
adam_r
The hubsan x4 ( what you should buy first before spending 10x the price on a bigger one) has gyros on the flight controller board. My big helicopter has this on it as a flight controller board. It has 6 axis gyros. The more expensive version has a barometer, gyros, gps and a few other additions but to me it wasnt worth double the cost. http://www.radioc.co.uk/mobile/Product.aspx?id=37747
Tony
Jebus it's getting complicated ...... I thought a giro would just be an electronic spirit level?
adam_r
A gyro is an electronic spirit level.. But there are also control loops that correct any non inputs from the user... I.e the gyro can correct for wind gusts
Tony
Sounds expensive and a bit to easy..... I do like the look of the quod things but my heart still pines for a helicopter.
adam_r
Its only as easy as you make it Tony. The gyros can be completely turned of via a switch on your controller. This then means your flying with no artificial help. Its called 'acro' mode. Angle mode is similar to acro apart from it wont let you bank the quad more than a pre determined angle (set up by the user in the gui) Horizon mode is where the gyros are fully functional and do most of the work.. I.e self level etc. Horizon is perfect for a beginner as its super smooth to fly but at the same time it rather frustrating as you dont have full control of the quad. Tony
Ok i'm sold and need to scratch this itch so where is the best place to buy a quod?
adam_r
Tony spend £2 on the hubsan x4.. The one i linked to on amazon. If you can get to grips with that then go further
Tony
I've lost the link

Tony
Looks good and i'm right there other than what is the flying time between charges because it's not stated in the descriptions.
Rich
Did you not read the customer questions, around 7 minutes.
adam_r
Flight time is around 5-7 minutes depending what your doing.. Charge time is a dismal 40 min (i have purchased 2 spares) because of this
Rich
That's the same for most quads and helicopters of this size, you don't get long for the charge time.
