Tony
The manufacturer only guarantees a five year lifespan for the construction/ compound durability of their product. It's for this reason they are dated... The 3600 correlates to week 36 year 00. Here is the rest of the tyre..... Some time ago a major tyre chain was prosecuted for selling a new tyre that was 15yrs old.... The manufacturers guarantees was well past and not held responsible for the tyres failure.... Points to remember: 1: It is not illegal to sell a tyre that is out of date. Subject to sale of goods act. 2: The manufacturers obligation is void after 5yrs and considered 'user beware' 3: Check the dates next time you buy tyres.... Most technicians are not aware of the marks...
Rich
Something I've never thought of even though I check me tyres regularly. I have bought some 2nd hand tyres to put on me escort, better check the date on them though!

Tango
Just changed both rear tyres on my daughters Corsa because they were looking just like your first pic, fortunately when they were off they didn't look anything like the second pic, but guess it wouldn't have taken too long

Moffet
Is the printed date the expiry date or the date of manufacture?
Rich
I bought a part worn tyre that's on me car now a few weeks ago. Just checked the date, it says 2304. So has this gone out of date or has it got another 2 years left?
Tony
Is the printed date the expiry date or the date of manufacture? Date of manufacture..... From this the manufacturer is liable for the constructions durability for five years.

So if it were to break up like your photo and was a fault of the tyre would I be entitled to a replacement even though it's a part worn? What exactly do the manufacturers guarantee? The guarantee is against manufacturing defects.... The tyre is sent back for inspection (free to you) and inspected to asses liability. The refund is a percentage for the unused remaining tread... Half worn then half your replacement fee back.

Otherwise people could be buying badly damaged worn ones that are still guaranteed and try to claim on them?

You need to purchase a new tyre. Have the fault inspected (free) then the remaining tread acts as a percentage toward a refund of the replacement tyre. MondeoGhiaX
does this 5 year guarantee actually mean that a tyre older than this is unsafe to use though? i do a very low mileage in my austin - only a few hundred miles a year, and it has had many periods of lay-up (years sometimes) in the the 13 years ive owned it. the two front tyres are probably about 8 years old, but they look almost new (loads of tread and no visible cracking or damage). one rear tyre is about the same age with even less wear. the other rear tyre is a michelin mx which has been on the car since i bought it, it still has plenty tread but is just starting to show signs of ageing. i have never had an mot advisory on my tyres, never mind a failure! i asked in another topic about new tyres for this car. i thought maybe i should just change the lot in one go, purely because of their age. but having just inspected them all again at the weekend, i think i would be throwing away perfectly good tyres, not to mention wasting money i dont need to. but if its a safety issue, thats a different matter of course. what do you think? Considering the low mileage you do then a visual inspection will suffice.... But if it were your daily drive, motorways and alike then you would need to change them. For your information the Michelin MX went out of production about 20yrs ago
MondeoGhiaX
For your information the Michelin MX went out of production about 20yrs ago omg. then it must be at least that old! maybe this is living proof that premium brand tyres are actually better made than budgets. i have had budget tyres on other cars and the sidewalls have cracked after less than 2 years, just through being in the sunlight. this michelin tyre has lasted for ever. i think it is time to replace it though, perhaps i should donate it to a museum. Well yes, seemingly the MX has surpassed the five year promise... I don't recommend anything over 10mph though or she may "blow"....
