Tony
Not sure why but this time i feel nervous for Andy Green> http://news.sky.com/story/1281758/engineers-speed-towards-1000mph-supercar
SMARTLY
The record attempt will take place in the South African desert around a specially-built 12 mile track. Around a track? Surely not at potentially 760mph plus
Tony
That can't be right...... If i'm correct the car doesn't have brakes so it would take 12 miles to stop alone......
SMARTLY
Sure it must be a straight line.
Tony
I think we have the wrong impression of the word "track"..... I think it refers to the desert track made for the speed attempt.
liner33
It does say track and not circuit
Tony
True..... I would like to see a 1000mph car on a corner
SMARTLY
It does say "around" a specially-built 12 mile track
parthiban
Have to admit I don't really see the point of these speed records but love the engineering behind it! I assume they are just building a 12 mile straight runway, even a banked circle wouldn't work would it?
NickT
Coming from the man who has a Ferrari I love the engineering too. I took my dad to Coventry car museum for Father's Day and saw Thrust SSC, simply mind blowing.. The only thing quicker is the money coming out of the bank when I get paid. . The point I was making though is that this stuff is useful when it transfers into car tech - so spending millions in F1 can be worthwhile as that tech trickles down into normal cars and such. A jet powered car though, will it have any practical application? But like I said I love the engineering so it is good that this sort of thing is done even if it has no real benefit overall
liner33
The engineering challenges will drip down , its rockets as well as jets on this one though iirc , jet cars have been around for donkeys years
