lebon
Do you know what the actual problem is? It's a rack and pinion EPS system (Electric Power Steering) and it was a major issue as hundreds (millions?) were recalled globally for the racks to be changed out, including mine at 2,500 quid a pop don't know if this included labour, but it took around 4 hours to do. Some people had already experienced what appeared to be total failure of the power assist at low speeds as they couldn't turn the wheels at all. On the original rack my car seemed to have a vagueness in steering and seemed to drift about at higher speeds, and this was cured by changing the rack. The system is speed sensitive so the feedback from the wheel changes the faster you go, becomes 'firmer', so it appears this system failed resulting in almost a reversal of the intent i.e. reduced power assist at low speed and too much at the higher end. . Got the date wrong, it was two years ago, the recall included certain 2007 GS 450h, 2006 2007 GS, IS and RX 400h vehicles and fault was assigned to a faulty electric motor. Well mine had the same problem with the vagueness of the steering at high speeds and slight drifting, but lexus canterbury was adamant there was nothing wrong with it they even blamed the road surface on top of that it was tram lining which it never did before. Tango do you know what year IS model were recalled as mine is 2007. Thanks

lebon
Another update on my ongoing saga with my lexus, just booked a visit to WIM to sort out my Geo, as it seems they have done it wrong. For 3 months now trying to sort out the issues, from replacing track rod end to replacing my tyres twice and then the steering rack replacement and now finally to geo in the hopes to get my car back to how it was before.Looking forward to my visit to WIM and in the hope that Tony will sort it out. lebon
Tony, I thought Ill give you a feeedback after my trip down to WIM yesterday, first of all it was a pleasure meeting you yesteday. Did a 100 mile return trip yesterday, now tramlining is not as bad as it was before and the steering feels much better now but the issue of the car not feeling 'planted' and the 'nervousness' is still there at speeds over 65. I am not sure if this can be cured, as was never like this before. Any suggestions?
Tony
Dame....... Some cars have speed related steering weighting, meaning the EPS adds weight to the steering the faster you go.
lebon
Dame....... Some cars have speed related steering weighting, meaning the EPS adds weight to the steering the faster you go. Meaning by EPS adding weight to the steering, the steering feels 'solid as you drive faster and yes thats how the steering feels when I drive and thats not the issue, the issue is the wheels dont feel its touching the 'floor' as I drive faster kinda feel like you are floating. Hope I have explained myself clearer.

SMARTLY
Can't you configure the steering in the menu to different settings? Like Normal, sport etc? Just a thought.
lebon
Yes you can but wouldnt make any difference to the steering
