Rich
Driving home I have to go straight ahead at a roundabout and the road goes downhill and around a sharp bend. I went around it tonight (it's raining as well) and the traffic had stopped, I slammed the brakes on and the ABS kicked in, which allowed me to stop before ploughing into the car in front. I don't rate my new tyres much in the wet either, they seem to loose traction very easily They're ok on the pug as they're 185 wide but mine are 215, I'm not looking forward to winter with these tyres! Rich
Reads like you were going to fast for the conditions you naughty boy I knew that assumption would be made! Actually I wasn't going fast, I was doing no more than 15-20mph as I had just come off the roundabout. The road bends round straight after you join it I just wasn't expecting the build up of traffic. I slammed the brakes on and the car started to skid but the ABS stopped it. Been along time since something like that happened and I didn't have ABS then, that was a brown trouser moment!! I too would say you where still a little fast for the conditions, and if the bend was that tight, you should leave yourself comfortable breaking disctance... saying that, i was doing about 20 mph around a roundabout yesterday and hit a massive patch of oil / diesel. fortunately no cars where about but if there was i would have gone right in to the side of them

I never had this problem with the Toyos or Falkens and towards the end of their life I wasn't even that keen on them in the wet but they were better than these! I had another scarey moment a month back where I think the road was greasy (again on these new tyres). It had been raining but I was approaching a bend doing around 30 mph (it's a 40 limit) and I started to turn but the car started sliding towards the oncoming traffic. I backed off the gas and managed to ease it around, needed clean pants after that cos I nearly hit someone. Alot of lorries use the road so I think one may have spilt diesel. parthiban
Tyres are so important, I had budgets on for a week before I sorted the F1s out and was amazed at how rubbish they were, even in the dry......... And yes ABS is a real life-saver
Rich
Tyres are so important, I had budgets on for a week before I sorted the F1s out and was amazed at how rubbish they were, even in the dry......... And yes ABS is a real life-saver I'm starting to feel that budgets are ok for wheels up to a certain size and then they become useless. Not had a problem with any budgets on my previous cars that had 14" or 15" wheels and they're fine on the missus pug. When I had my escort I fitted 17's to it with 205 wide tyres, which were crappy Nankangs (aka ditch finders) and I had some scary moments in that. When I got the mondeo it had 15" steelies that had budgets and I had no problems with them. Then I got some 16" alloys that had Michilin Pilot Sports and they were surperb although tramlined badly. Then I got the 17's I have now, which came with brand new Toyo's (the rears are still on) and the grip was fantastic. Then I put the Falken on and they were ok but tramlined badly as well. Then I got these budgets fitted as I was planning on selling the car soon and I've had a couple of close calls now where I've lost traction far too easily. So I've come to the conclusion that budgets do have their place but only up to 185/195 wide, above that I think better tyres should be fitted. liner33
I had a very close call yesterday on a dual carriageway , i was only doing around 50mph in the lh lane going up a hill when the car in front suddenly slammed on his brakes , dunno why i presumed he was braking lightly due to getting close to the truck in front but he just stopped dead . I think perhaps he stalled it and panicked , he was driving a 1.9 Octavia and i know my 2.0 one will stall if you let the revs drop too low in 6th , guess the lower power models will stall even easier I went up his inside and the truck behind me only just stopped in time , i noticed today in the same place there was a 7 car crash , its the truckers fault usually they slow down due to the steep hill and then pull out into the rh lane doing 30mph as they cant wait a moment to overtake. Rich
I hate idiots like that, brake far too quickly when there is no need and nearly cause accidents. It's raining again this morning going to work and there was alot of standing water, I was scared to go above 25mph as it felt like there was no grip at all on the front of the car. In the dry they're fine but I do not like these tyres in the wet So they will either be going on the rear or I'll get some cheap smaller alloys with better tyres on.
