Waz, will the picture in your sig be 3D if i put on some of those funky red and blue lensed cinema specs? :D

I actually struggled to beat him down to 2800, but mainly because it's still in warranty from the engine rebuild nearly 2 years ago and it's only done 10k since the work was done, whole year's MOT, Best example that I test drove and made the others seem rough and breathless by comparison.

 

Now it's time to sell the faithful '5. :crying_anim02:

What a bargain! Especially with a recent engine rebuild.

 

Owners who bought these new must be kicking themselves they've depreciated so quickly.

I don't think they are very good on the fuel so this could have a bearing on the price.

 

The same can be said for alot of cars, mine struggles to hit 30 mpg on a run and gets low 20s around town. The Legacy I am looking at will probably struggle to do the same. Even the missus 1.6 Civic only gets mid 20s around town. The RX8 shouldn't be any worse than an Impreza or Evo yet they hold their value pretty well. I reckon it's down to the rotary engines and their reliability or rather lack of it.

I don't think you would buy an RX8 if you do alot of mileage anyway. The difference between 18 mpg and low 20s, which I assume the Evo does over 5k miles a year isn't too bad, around £400 I would think. I guess it all comes down to your disposable income and whether that money would be better spent elsewhere. For me it would pay my annual insurance so having a car that does low 20s is better than high teens, which is why I decided not to go for the TT Legacy.

 

Considering how much the RX8 uses in fuel you still see quite alot of them on the road compared to Impreza's and Evo's.

1st tank full, then a top up 80 miles later and it was 17.7 mpg. I was hooning about a bit more than my normal driving style due to new toy syndrome, will keep an eye on the oil to see how that goes, they're claimed to only be small quantities of oil, but it definitely consumes it by design and must not be left until the light comes on!

 

Value wise, they are definitely impacted by the 'weird' and unreliable engine, and the consumption. I hope I'm right about my plan that if it went to 65k miles before a 'hot start' problem demanded a rebuild, and that's done now, it's only got 74 on it, I could be doing another 50 before I have to worry about that. And now I have it for this money, if the body doesn't let me down and I'm still enjoying it, I'll rebuild it again, which still costs less than I bought it for, and they have extended their warranties to 30 months / 36,000 miles.

Guys from the owners club told me an oil/ filter change every 2k vastly extends engine life.

For what it costs that seems cheap for piece of mind , I'm buying oil for the Skyline now 25 litres at a time , costs about £25 to do an oil change then

All good news and advice, the previous owner had maintained a frequency of a change per 1000 miles since the rebuild, so I may try and keep up the good work! Apparently the rebuild specialists all recommend a different grade oil to Mazda specification, the thinking seems to be that Mazda used thinner oil to get through emissions and economy tests, deviating from what they recommended for the RX7, which actually has the same engine in the FD3 RX7 as the RX8 mk1. (Apparently the mk2 RX8 was modified to increase the oil delivery to the rotor shaft bearings.)

 

Great advice I've learned here, if its a weird car, or rare, join the owners' club, it's a must. And forums like this, specialists in the industry who know what's going on. You can't get that experience on your own in several lifetimes!

The RX cars apparently take only mineral oil to protect the side-seals from damage due to synthetics use, and the rebuild spec is now 10-45, which I'm guessing by normal standards is a cheap oil.

I've got a genuine alignment query now. Obviously I've been slack and not checked tyre pressures, which I'll put right tomorrow, but I've noticed that the car does not pull under drive or braking, and runs straight. It does however seem that the steering is light when turning left, but heavier turning right, which is most noticeable cruising at speed and navigating curves in the road, rather than low speed manoeuvres. What thoughts are there, tyres? SAI? Camber different side to side?

 

I'll do the pressures and check back, but basically I can say the tyres are worn evenly, plenty of tread (front) and the same brand/type on all corners.
