CIH
Retrorides gathering at the Haynes museum in yeovil. 200 miles each way. I hate roadtrips but I'll be in convoy with a Bluey Turbo and hopefully some random retro formations on the way. See ya monday. So to speak. Uh, type. With piccys! CIH
Here! Arrived about 1pm Saturday with Jack/Redbird in his Bluey SR Turbo. Sat Nav dumped us outside some guys house about 1/2 a mile short which meant we wasted a bit of time looking for the place lol. First evening was spent camping, where we hooked up with some chaps from other forums and spent the night watching classic car films p**sed as a fart. Y'know, a bit of beer and Mad Max becomes the best film ever made. Next moring everyone de-camped and moved across into the Haynes Museum grounds, next to the haynes workshops and a small sprint circuit. Normally I spend the whole time with me camera getting awesometm pictures but I was glued to the small sprint circuit. I decided last minute to have a punt in Silvia but didn't have me licence so that was a no-go. Probably for the best as it was a long haul there and back and she's already overdue a service. Declan Hicks and his Drifty Chaser were cool and surprisingly smooth on the circuit. Tramp-drift Senny dwent well too, despite what looked like poor geo (lots of rear camber). They had a big mobile diner with a classic yank v8 tractor unit. That went round the track too (without diner trailer) though apparantly they run it at santa pod with the trailer! M1 MR2 looked ideal for the small circuit while the zetec & webber'd mk2 escort sounded pure 70s rally car. A mk3 Cortina Estate with a big power V8 that struggled for traction. Turbo'd and other highly tuned Imps were there too. Or how about a Triumph Herald with a Mazda rotary engine ? And don't laugh at the Volvos. They're sporting 16v Renault engines nowadays. Refreshing to be at a show where there's none of the old "haters" and everyone is able to express themselves freely. I think the sprint runs were timed but quite a few on for a laugh with the most unlikely cars ie; 2CV, Datsun Cedric luxo-barge etc. Biggiest surprise was an almost total lack of Minis. I think there was another show on in cheshire as, heading home on the M6, I was in convoy with an 80s Jag V12 barge (not that he knew about it heh) and we were briefly joined by a classic Marcos! Anyway I'd like to turn the S12 into a sprinty. Which is more or less what I was going to do originally (awesome brakes & suspension, 200bhp) but it would include much weight reduction too. Would have be nice to raise the profile of the S12 and the Nissan clubs by getting some attention on track. So next year's target is track time and also to visit the near-by Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum.
