liner33
legal though and useful for sat nav
Tony
Police pull you over if they see the phone light on so it's a bit risky.
liner33
Not illegal though , loads of people use their phones for sat nav . Its not illegal to use a phone , its not illegal to touch a phone its only illegal to have it in your hand and even then there are "get outs" like the Jimmy Carr defence
Tony
So you could text if it was in the holder?
liner33
yep , still get done for careless driving though if caught
Tony
That's what i mean, if the police see the phone on they have to assume the worst and your forever getting tugged.
liner33
You can get done for smoking in the car if it impairs your driving though , same offence careless driving. Â No different to having the phone in a holder elsewhere , at least from a legal standpoint
Tony
I suppose the police target those who text rather than those who smoke. Can't say i've ever heard of anyone getting done for smoking but i'm sure it's happened.
parthiban
You can't text, that's illegal. The only times you can touch a phone are to answer or cancel a call, nothing else. And bizarrely to adjust a satnav which could be just as dangerous as texting!
Tony
The law needs more definition but policing it seemingly has a single target worthy of a stop and that's texting.
parthiban
I was trying to find proof but seems Liner is right, which I'm shocked by - as long as a phone is in a holder then you can do whatever you like on it. What kind of utter nonsense is that!
liner33
Yep not saying it's right but the law is specifically targeted at those using a mobile phone when driving and actuslly holding it

Geoffers
Slightly off topic but when I smoked I always had this fear that the airbag would deploy just as I had it in my mouth and force it into my eyeball! Â Or a car coming out of a side road at speed or something and knocking my car upside down and the cig landing down my shirt or somthinging while I was trapped - now that must have happned to someone. Would be absolutely agonising slowly getting burnt through. Â Right all right though - terrible how it isn't actually illegal to text or alter phone while driving if it's in a holder. Even "driving mode" on Android can have too much to lookat rather than just a couple of big essential buttons.
Tony
And yet it's illegal to have the front tv on while driving?
liner33
and it would be illegal to be watching a movie on your phone , even if it was in a holder
Tony
Very good point indeed.
