Rick101
Hi, Done a few drives in my M3 now and have realised it is tramlining quite badly at speed. Had put it down to new car, different driver, my nerves etc at first but it's def an issue. Seems ok at legal speeds but if you ever need to go faster or are doing a swift overtake, the car seems to be all over the place. Note I am referring to bumpy North Yorkshire A and B roads. Not done a long motorway run in it yet so will have to see if it's also affected then too. Any common or known issues with these cars? It has the OE Conti sport M3 specific tyres on. Thanks
Tony
First thing to check is the front control arm compliance bushings?...... Whys to test.... 1: Visual splits 2: Handbrake on, steering straight, can you rock the wheel back/ forth ( not side-to-side ) that's a different test. 3: IN A SAFE PLACE while driving at 10/ 15 mph dab the brake and can you feel a thump back at the pedal or steering
Rick101
Am going out tomorrow. Will give 2 and 3 a try. Not noticed any 'thumps' before but will test again. re No 2, you you mean the steering wheel? and do you mean in the towards and away direction? Thanks Tony. Tony
#2 is standing in front of the wheel and trying to push it toward the back of the car, so fore/ aft...... The brake test is a short sharp dab on the brake not a slow gentle braking.
liner33
Do M3's have different width tyres front and rear? Every car I have owned that has tramlined to some extent
Rick101
Yes they do. Can't recall of the top of my head but possibly 225/255. Its also on 19's which isn't as good as the 18's apparently.
liner33
Are the tyres matching ? A quick google suggests thats its common and worse if the tyres are different
Rick101
Yes, all matching, all have medium tread, all are the original issue M3 specific tyres.
Tony
Being an M3 i assume their not runflat tyres?
Rick101
Correct, they are not runflats. Tried the brake test today, no unusual noises. Didn't notice any movement in the wheel pull either though i suppose it may be easier to do when on a lift.
Tony
What tyre pressure are you running on the front?
Rich
When I got the Accord it had 225 wide tyres, which are the widest I've ever used and that tramlines abit. Isn't it just one of the downsides of having wide tyres? With the winter wheels on, which are 205 wide it's much better and I'm actually thinking about selling the 17s and getting 16s for the summer wheels as the ride is also more comfortable. But the 17s do look good, which I'd so do the 19s on your M3 and in the dry it does seem to handle better on 225 wide tyres.
Rick101
Hmm, It's as per the official figures. It's away at the garage at the moment but seem to recall it was 2.1 bar front. 2.3 bar rear.
parthiban
A change of tyres might help. Never driven a standard M3, but tested an M3 CSL a few years ago and didn't notice any major tramlining issues (that was on the OEM Michelin Cup tyres).
