Mk3 MX5 Alignment Done 5000 miles ago, 1 bald tyre

I had my alignment done on my lowered mk3 MX-5 at WIM in December last year and have done around 5000 miles since then, at the time I had my current Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres on that had done around 4000 miles on at the time of the alignment.

Now my rear passenger side tyre is virtually on the wear indicators and needs replacing whereas ALL the other three tyres are fine with plenty of tread left.

What could be wrong?

I've not hit anything to knock the alignment out or anything, but have never really been happy with the car since it was done.

I live hundreds of miles away from WIM so I can't just nip to get it done, but if I'm shredding tyres like this I'm going to have to have the alignment done again soon.

The wear is mostly to the centre of the tyre -- not either edge. BTW I checked tyre pressure and it was 30psi all round (Ive since dropped it to 29psi in the hope to slow down any more wear).

Any ideas?

Something is obviously wrong! For me to complete the picture can you display/pm the cars registration number so i can review the calibration. Immediately i have to be defencive since Geometry positions cannot favor the centre of the tyre solely. I have to ask if the calibration felt wrong why did you not contact me?..... Nevertheless is there is any question wim has failed i will pay for the tyre replacement without animosity.

In terms of why I didn't get in touch, I've guess I'd kind of learned to live with it, assuming this was how it was meant to feel... That and knowing I wouldn't be down to Watford any time soon (I'm in Leeds). It was only recently when I took all four wheels off to have a good wheel scrub and back polish did I notice the tread was looking so bad.

To be honest it handles very well, just some days it wants to pull to the kerb and feels numb around the centre, that combined with the steering wheel not being centered. It could be a trait of the mk3 and the big 17" wheels, perhaps I should have let you drive it before I left? The wheel centre thing really irritates me...its close but not perfect...

Either way, the reg was MX51 OFF - you did the settings according to the one's I brought with me from the US Miata forum inteded for lowered mk3s (taking into account my actual ride height).

I might see if I can book a day off work and come down for you to take a look, guess its worth it for the sake of 400 miles and a tank of fuel!

I recall the car and how you negotiated the visit with an event locally. I stand by my word if wim has failed then i will admit to that! but the descriptions displayed regarding the tyre wear seem odd!.. How do you want to proceed here? i am all ears.

Leave it with me Tony, I need to think when I can make it down and when you can slot me in.

Could the way I take roundabouts cause this? Being the tyre taking the most wear? Can't see that...

Might see if I can take a shot of the wear of both rears and post here to see what you think.

Thanks for the offer to pay for the tyre very good of you, but I saw you do the job and it all seemed right on paper. Just wonder if its strayed way off since (doesn't feel like it has) just can't work out the odd wear.

Cheers, I'll be in touch

Roundabout's no. If you can post some images here that would help me determine the pattern of wear..... Other than that all i can offer is 100% on the chin i will pay for the error offer if i was wrong, or 100% let's work together and find a reason for the wear. We are both in a dysfunctional position with the MK3... There is a catalogue of issues refining this chassis, even Mazda subliminally admit this....... Anyhoo i am available and welcome your example even if it costs me personally since our records will open some valuable data.

Images are free and easy to up-load here. Please can you load the tyre profile.

  • 3 weeks later...

Is it because the tyre has been over inflated? i make a point of checking every 2 weeks which probably isn't enough but it seems stable enough.

It does seem a bit odd that only 1 tyre has worn, but im sure between you both you'll get it sorted :crying_anim: keep us all informed.

Central wear is normally due to inflation issues. It cannot be normal domestic geometrical issues. Nevertheless since i am flying blind with the cause. I did offer to pay for the tyre replacement, giving the owner 100% benefit of the doubt. I feel the criminal is casing or compound failure so nothing to do with me or the owner in reality!

Hi again Tony, apologies for just dissapearing and not following this up.

I've since had the tyres replaced (although that was a dodgy tail in itself involving dodgy Thai spec Eagle F1s http://www.mx-5.com/Community/forums/ShowT...px?PostID=20483 ).

I didn't keep hold of the old tyre I'm afraid though, but did take some photos (on my pc at home so can't post them here just now). It's really difficult to see in the photos the problems with the tyre though. Suffice to say the centre of the tyre about four inches wide had worn right down, but the outers hadn't.

For info when I've changed the tyres its both the passenger side tyres that I've had to change, the rear one that was the problem and the front one too had more wear than either the two on the drivers side of the car. The rear drivers side one is now on the front passenger side and the two new ones on the rear).

Can I arrange to come down and see you again Tony - for a checkup and re-adjustment if required. The place that changed the tyres recently did say the rear wheel in question looked odd to them. They couldn't say why (did't have any aligmnent equipment) they just said it sort of looked odd.

Surely its not possible to tell by sight alone if something is a mm out!

I was hoping to come down Friday 1st June, around lunchtime. If this is any good for you Tony?

Cheers

David

I too have been meaning to get my lowered MX5 MK3 aligned properly at WIM... I must've done about 6000 miles at least since the car was dropped, but have not yet noticed any abnormal tyre wear, though tbh the wheels have stayed on the car.

Need to get in for an alignment on a Friday afternoon at STS, just waiting for a set of replacement Mazda wheels to come through, and wasn't too sure if it'd be a good idea to wait for these to be replaced before having the alignment done, or whether it will make no difference, because the new wheels will be the same as the old ones (just hopefully without corrosion!).

What do you think Tony?

Unless you are changing the wheel size then the rims are irrelevant.... You will need to book in though.

Nope, nothing should be changing size-wise.

Need to come in one Friday before the 15th of June... can I PM you to book?

Been reading this thread and was wondering what the outcome was but then it stopped.....

Was the problem resolved satisfactorily?

The problem was the tyre compound not the Geometry.... We think?... Reason being the old casting was disposed of, but the calibration was fine.
