How Much Damage Can a Pothole Cause?

Recommended Posts

Wasn't the suspension uprated for the event?

Yes, most cars had increased ride height, stronger springs and dampers but the constant hammering from the washboard roads and sometimes unavoidable potholes took their toll.

On the Hilux we had rally raid dampers but standard springs and had to change them in Nairobi to standard spares. All of the organisers' Hiluxs needed new front dampers too - some of them had completely destroyed lower bushes. Ours weren't that bad, but one of the dampers was fully knackered damping-wise.

With hindsight, if you can get them, stronger front springs might have helped a bit but they are pigs to mount on the damper even as standard as they are very strong and with a lot of preload.

Many found that aftermarket and so-called competition items just weren't good enough and didn't last long at all. Manufacturers standard kit lasted longest.

Our Hilux had also done the Peking to Paris event last year but as a marshals car and didn't have this trouble even in Mongolia which was very tough apparently.
