Adjustable 'Drop links'

Recommended Posts

Recently i was made aware of adjustable drop links.... are they any good? and if fitted does this mean there is no need to up-rate the sway bar?

I'm not sure about adjustable drop links.....

When we fitted the coilovers to the MR2 the standard front DL's were way too long. Peter Gidden of sBits made me a set of custom DL's which although are not adjustable they fit perfectly. It's only when the car is lowered that the requirement for shorter DL's is necessary, just uprating to a thicker ARB uses the standard parts.

Interesting.... on the sites main the DL looks as if it is adjustable at the top end, hence the hexagonal locking nut?..... if anyone would know you would.... are there any real benefits from an adjustable drop link in your honest opinion.... could this belay the need to replace the sway bar?

My understanding was adjustable / custom length droplinks could be used to slightly 'prime' the ARB making it 'slightly' stiffer. Personally i'd not bother and just get an uprated bar as i'm sure the differences would be negligible

I need a 'slap down' on this topic.... Assume the sway bar is up-rated? and during testing the Yew felt lazy wouldn't the opportunity to 'freely' adjust the sway benefit...... If no then why replace the sway in the first place..... And deny manipulation to suit.

Bit late to the party on this one!

One benefit of the adjustable drop links is that they are more often than not rose (or Heim) jointed.

The benefit with these is that there is no rubber bushing in the joint, so there is no compliance, it's a direct connection.

This can be felt through sharper turn in.

adjustable links are something that has come over from the track racing cars.

if a track is predominately say a left hander (nascar) you can preload the ARB

and has been stated, they allow the car after being lowered to have the links shortened

Mine came from Steve Heath Engineering, he does a lot of work on TVR's, wrote the book on them apparently, but he started making them for the MX5.

Don't know where you would get them for other marques tho'.

Lexie was a test car for the MX5 drop links.

Was there any guide to setting these up or is it a case of try it and see?... Reason i ask is i've never seen a ratio map for ARB's despite the front/ rear bias is incredibly vital.

Set up was just to get the ARB's parallel to the ground and remove any play that may exist between the ARB and droplinks.

Never seen ratio maps either, but the ARB's I've seen for the MX5 always come as a matched pair. People seem to rely on other peoples experience and rides when buying new ARB's

The Steve Heath site has PDF instructions for fitting the drop links on the following page.
