Audi TTS Alignment issue

Hi Tony hope you can assist because im scratching my hair out with this one.

Ever since i bought my car new just over a year ago my steering has been a few degrees to the left when driving in a straight line, in a year i have had it aligned about 4 times which is not normal and no one seems to get it right!

2 months ago i took a trip down to you guys and it was doing the same thing so i called and the helpful guy i spoke to said i should bring the car back for another look.

when i brought it back the guy i think his name is peter said that the bolt that adjusts the rear toe is not locking properly and i should get a new bolt and washer from  as per the pic below but i thought that as i still have warranty on the car i will take it in to Audi for them to resolved.

So Audi have had my car now for 2 weeks, they took my car to a 3rd party to have it aligned as they don't have a hunter machine and when i tested it the steering was a few degrees to the right, i said i wasn't happy and they did another alignment and now the steering to back to the right.

i showed them a print out of the bolt that adjusts the toe and they said it all looks fine

they sent me this email today

I have spoken to senior management and the master technician that has tested your vehicle, and in line with the geometry report from the bodyshop your vehicle is operating within manufacturer specification.

(Please refer to the attachment – your Geometry results)

They have all confirmed that TTS can be very camber sensitive due to larger wheels and low profile tyres, however this is very much a characteristic of the vehicle and not a defect.

There is no further action we can carry out on the vehicle and we will require you to collect your vehicle.

Can you help?

Hello

Peter is correct about the bolt because they tend to stretch and then not lock correctly, every more so since your geometry has been worked on so many times.

A few questions.... Did Peter get you to set the final steering position?

Has Audi given you any geometry reports?

Has Audi checked or re-set the steering position censor and if yes do you have any evidence this has been done?

The comment from Audi about camber sensitive is utter bollox.... A few points> The road crown deforms the tyres circumference NSF/ OSF meaning the radius is bias. The bias generates an "eventual drift", not a pull so not a displaced steering position. If there was a physical pull you as a driver has to resist to the left then yes the steering position would  be right hand down.

The sprung chassis, let's say body has a natural desire to be level ( gravity ) so in this desire the sprung chassis transmits the wanton level to the coils meaning the NSF/ OSF coil helix positions would be different depending on the severity of the road crown. This in it's self isn't detectable because the suspension is interdependent.

One more point. Low profile tyres can make the car tramline because there's less available flexibility in the side-wall but they cannot hold the steering wheel off-line unless there's a pull you have to resist.

Hi Tony

I spoke to peter and have booked an appointment for Monday so he is going to install a new bolt along with doing an alignment.

This is the GEO done by audi http://imgur.com/1OyT98v

I don't think Audi have checked the the steering angle censor and by the sounds of things they are now refusing to investigate any further, good old dealers for you!

however 2 weeks ago i got my mate to reset the steering angle sensor via vagcom

How was it after the re-set?

Only thing i'm not happy about on the geo report is the OSF camber..... Camber has a conical force ( like a cone rolling into it's centre ) so there could be a need to resist that force by holding the steering RHD..... Can you feel any energy at the steering wheel?

Little advice in the future you need to get the technicians geometry report which has much more details. The one you have been given and please excuse the language is deemed as the dumb customer report. The tech report would hold other angles like the KPI/ SAI, from this i could tell if there's a bend in the lower wishbone but i don't have that information.
