Rear N/S Uneven Wear

Hi All,

I have been having some slight wheel noise coming from the rear/nearside wheel and today I popped some new boots on the back wheels and whilst doing so the mechanic commented that the wear on the rear/nearside wheel was really uneven which after seeing it, it was.

It was suggested that this could have been down to a faulty tyre but also mentioned that maybe the bushes had gone on that side. My question is, has anyone else experienced this? and if it is the bushes where are they and how would I tell if they were split or shot?

Now the reason for asking is that even with the new tyres on I can still hear the noise coming from the rear...it is not major noise but more of a low frequency noise (not sure if I'm explaining it right) however there is no pull or wobble in the wheel whilst driving...I have also jacked it up and spun the wheel to see if I can see any unevenness in the rotation and I cannot and I have tried to rock the wheel and there is not give there either.

I'm driving a Ford Focus '09 with 34k on the clock.

Any advise anyone can give would be well received.

Thanks - Jason :)

Are you sure the damper (shock absorber if you must..) isn't knackered? That can create some very odd tyre wear.

I don't know about recent Fords but I do see a lot of relatively recent Vauxhalls with rear wheels skipping and bouncing around on the motorway which is definitely knackered dampers.

Welcome to WIM :)

I'm pretty sure the Focus has rear adjustable toe, as well as the front...have you had a geo done?

The wear could possibly be heel and toe, I think this kind of wear produces a noise. But if you've had new tyres it might not be that, depending on how many miles you've done so far.

I had a noise from the front of my car recently and didn't think it was the bearing as there was no play in the wheel but it turns out it was after popping into WIM for them to check. They said if you hold the spring while spinning the wheel you should be able to feel the roughness through it, this might work for the rear as well if it is the bearing.

Welcome to wim

ER is spot on. The adjustable rear toe will generate the tyre wear which is very common on the Focus and then the noise is probably a bearing and as said hold the coil while spinning the wheel and feel for vibration.

Many Many thanks all for the replies, welcome and info.

ER - nope I have not had a geo done on it yet but have read up on it since and think that I will.

In the meantime I will try jacking up the car and spinning the wheel and hold the spring to see if it's the bearing (I hope not :( )....with the new tyres on we are still getting a low rumble (might be a better way to describle the sound) with about 400 miles done on the new tyres so hopefully it is the tracking/geo rather than bearing.

Again many thanks for the information.

Cheers - Jason

If it's a rumble it sounds like a bearing to me. Don't worry though as it's an easy job on the rear, just remove the brakes, undo the hub nut and the bearing/hub comes off complete, same as the Mondeo. Then you just put the new one on, hub nut back on and then the brakes.

This is the kind of bearing you should need if it is that - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FOCUS-MK2-2004-2009-REAR-ABS-SENSOR-HUB-WHEEL-BEARING-/190722910321?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c67f8a871#ht_2912wt_1172

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, I have not yet been able to get to my mechanic as yet but I have done the test of spinning the wheel and holding the spring to see if there is any nosie/vibration through the spring and I felt nothing but I did here a clicking noise which I recorded in the following link - http://s821.photobucket.com/albums/zz140/beerjjj/Car%20-%20Ford%20Focus/?action=view&current=D137C385-53DE-474F-9CE5-504FD9EF3865-1817-0000021AF0D8D172.mp4

Is this noise a normal noise when spinning the wheels as not noticed it before....next steps is to get the bushes checked out then if they are all ok the tracking.

Thanks

Very odd noise - doesn't even really sound like the pads rattling in the caliper. It is a disc brake on the rear, isn't it? Have you tried putting the handbrake on a click or two to creat the slightest resistance and see if the sound goes away? Whatever it is, it still wouldn't have anything to do with the uneven tyre wear.
