Tony
My first thought was a rotary but then can a rotary have a super charger and what's that shaft in the middle all about?
SMARTLY
The engine says it's a Packard, so I'm guessing it's a 1930's maybe with something stacked on top to get the fuel / air in.
Tony
So do you think it's a charger on top?....I still wonder what the rod poking out is for?
SMARTLY
Dunno, maybe the rod is driven from the front of the engine?
Tony
It looks like it's connected to some type of gearbox.
liner33
The rod (Shaft) is just the drive shaft for the supercharger , there will be a pulley on the end connected to the crankshaft of the engine . Usually the supercharger is further forwards on the engine meaning you dont need such a long shaft http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/engines-drivetrain/1410-how-to-install-a-weiand-supercharger-on-small-block-street-smart-383/ The engine is a Packard straight 8 cyl from the 1940's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pQl8dmBaD8
Tony
Seems odd they would put a charger on such a basic engine?..... Last night i was thinking about that rod and i wondered if it was where they would put the starter..A bit like F1 when they used to put the starter up it's chuff. liner33
Is this a charger on a bike engine? zf795609557585f7d211a23b5b0579430.jpg Could be VW Beetle but not sure
Tony
I wondered if it was an aircraft engine but i think a single prop would use a rotary? It could be a bug engine but it's a bit tall.
SMARTLY
It is a V dub I think.
Tony
It is a V dub I think. Despite the height.
SMARTLY
yes, looks like it's been mounted on something.
Tony
Well if it were mounted very low i suppose it could be a bug engine.
liner33
Search for supercharger beetle and you'll see plenty that have done it
