I check over the car (weekly checks) fill the washer bottle up and notice the coolant resovoir is low (behind rad) and i just, without thought fill it up with water......now have i done a stupid thing should it have been Toyota coolant or is water fine. Something tells me i've made a boo boo.

Bazza
cant see a problem the most you will have done is diluted the mixture a bit the "to" and "from" temperatures may have changed slightly but i am sure they will still be within UK temperatures unless of course it was completly empty

scorps
Not quite empty Bazz, s'pose i put about 750ml in to bring it up to half way.
Bazza
Not quite empty Bazz, s'pose i put about 750ml in to bring it up to half way. thats a fair bit, for a top up perhaps you should concentrate your worries on where it went ! the water pumps are notorious for leaking
scorps
Maybe i should go back to Lexus and ask why it wasn't topped up when it went in for its 50k service
Roger440
750ml is a fair bit. Topping it up won't cause a problem, other than the slight change of protection, though longterm i would correct this to avoid any corrosion issues. As already stated, i think you really need to know where it has gone. Do you know over what period it has gone missing?
scorps
Since its 40k service i guess.(its one of those checks i never normally check) Right im going to drain it out and re-fill it the w/end.
GazzaK
I've always used distilled water for coolent, saves all that crud in normal tap water going through the engine and scaling up.
