What makes a tyre "Manufacturer approved" ?

Looking at getting new tyres on the Jag and it keeps coming back that the Dunlop Sports maxx is Jaguar approved . Is this some kind of commercial tie in or is there any genuine reason that Dunlops should be better than any other make provided they are the same spec ?

Pirelli made a P6000 (J) for jaguar which looks the same as the P6000 non J but has reinforced ply in the sidewall rather than normal ply so there is a difference but legally and insurance wise you can fit anything so a really gray area.
