parthiban
Comparing three different tyres at the moment, thought I'd share how I'm getting on with summer tyres in the current chilly temps. We often talk about how good winter tyres are, but not about which summer tyres work best when it's cold. The Lexus with Michelins on the front and Goodyears on the rear has exaggerated one fact - the Goodyears are awful when it gets cold. It's always been like that, but it's amplified now as the extra bite at the front end is making the rear feel even more loose. Actually need to swap them around to give the car a better balance. The Merc on Dunlops all round actually barely feels any different, if I floor it then obviously I get some wheel slip, but in normal sensible driving for the conditions the car feels absolutely fine. Having previously had Dunlops on the Lexus as well, I can see why they are specced as OEM tyres - they are clearly great all rounders when in the realms of performance summer tyres. I think the Michelins are potentially better as the summer performance was great but haven't had enough experience with them yet and with only 2 it's hard to say anyway. What summer tyres do you guys have on and how are you coping?
dazz33
Hi mate..well i have Michelin Energy on the front of my Vectra and are pretty good even though they are "Green Peace" tyres.. Quite good on turn in and good on braking.. But on the rear i have got Firestone Firehawk tyres and they are awfull and in the cold now are even worse.. Even though the roads are dry it feels like the back end could get away from me even at normal road speeds...
Rich
Both our cars have winter tyres on but if I compare them to the summer tyres on the Mondeo over the last 2 winters the difference is night and day with the current weather. On one particular roundabout coming out of work the Mondeo would always feel like it's losing the rear no matter what speed you did. I decided to accelerate around it last night to try them out and it stuck to the road like glue. Having taken the Escort out a few times over the last couple of months, which is on budget summer tyres that is very dodgy on even cold and slightly damp roads! That is exactly how the back of my car feels on the goodyears, went in to a large roundabout at about 20 and the rear still felt loose I decided to accelerate around it last night to try them out and it stuck to the road like glue. That's definitely something you can't do on summer tyres, to be fair it seems ok on the dunlops but I'm seriously on tiptoes on the goodyears. What Goodyears are they as my winter ones are the Ultragrip 7+ and they have shown no signs of letting go yet, I certainly feel safer driving in winter. I've not used summer Goodyears so can't compare. Maybe I should get some depending on the price

ChannelZ
Bridestone Turanza ER300 are like driving on rock wheels in winter. Hankook Ventus Prime are fine, as are Uniroyal RainExpert. The RainExpert are the best of the lot for grip, but a little wierd on the handling side of things.
