Tony
Not only have a never seen the film this was taken from I also never knew Charlie Chaplin did speaking rolls, this must be one of the greatest monologues I have ever heard and really is powerfull stuff, it's also a great lesson in acting from the master of silent films! Sagitar
It's from "The Great Dictator". I saw it during WWII. Chaplin played two roles, the dictator himself, a broad parody of Hitler, called something like Adenoid Heinkel, but also that of a jewish barber (I think) who looked like the dictator and was mistaken for him. The speech is by the little jewish barber impersonating the dictator and is the climax of the film. It's fascinating that Chaplin was lionised in many countries for these wartime views, but the same views resulted in him being hounded out of the 'States as a communist during the McCarthy era. He did actually return to the 'States for visits in later years, but he died and is buried in Switzerland.
