Tony
The minimum requirements are somewhat confusing since the increments are both Imperial and Metric so hopefully this will make things a little clearer. The minimum depth is 1.6mm covering 75% of the tyre measured from the exact centre of the tyre The remaining 2/8th can be devoid of any patten. But you need to be careful? In truth the tread width is not necessarily just the contact patch, some tyre manufacturers continue the tread onto the sidewall so an exact method to establish the legality needs to be established... First we need to determine the tyres dimensions. This example has a 235mm section width, the legal 1.6mm requirement needs to be retained within 176.25mm of the central area, the remaining 58.75mm needs to be divided between both edges, 29.37mm, so assuming the bald area does not exceed inboard more than 29.37mm then you are still legal. win says: Although the law has relaxed the margins we definitely do not support. The use of tyres that display the minimum limit or the wear pattern allowed within this explanation these are the minimum requirements, please remember that!
