Tony
Have you ever watched car adverts and thought, wow, that looks stunning? One big challenge when producing car adverts is the availability of the car, and the amount of expensive re-touching to the vehicle itself in the scene to make it realistic. Whether it is adding headlights, reflections or even adjusting the colour or tyres for different markets. The BLACKBIRD is the world’s first, fully customizable car rig, and it could revolutionize automotive productions by not needing the actual car featured in the shoot. Using The Mill’s extensive history in CG, vehicle re-skinning and scene mapping technology, the BLACKBIRD can imitate many vehicles by expanding the chassis, changing tyres and capturing the HDR scenery when it’s driven. https://player.vimeo.com/video/171939943

Tony
Would you buy a car based on a VR test drive though?
Rich
You would never buy a car without seeing it in the flesh first anyway so I don't see what the issue is?
Tony
The issue is the sales pitch where they are trying to sell an rendered image and i think this is running alongside the evolution of the VR headset.
Rich
As long as it looks the same as what it does in the flesh it wouldn't bother me.
phipck
i think the vr eliment is simply for the "brochure" scenario where dealerships can show essentially any car in the range to a customer instead of fancy photos in a brochure. This car is much more about providing production companies a tool or mule for their film. Much easier to film this rig in several different guises and render expensive rare or concept vehicals over the top
Tony
If the VR could add steering weight/ suspension feedback and alike then dealerships will be a distant memory.
