Offsets and handling effects

Thinking about the MR2, stock wheels have an offset of 45 fronts are 6" rear 7". When using aftermarket wheels are there any benefits of altering the offsets? Most after market wheels are 7" and 8" so an equal front and rear reduction in offset makes sense to effectively keep the centre line of the wheel in the same place. However many aftermarket sets have different offsets front and rear, could this have a negative effect on handling?

The rear wouldn't matter unless you fitted 15" or something like that..... The concern would be the front regarding handling and the effects would be the same as the topic we had about spacers.
