Tony
All VW's with rear "Twist beam" suspension> Soon generate an annoying knock at the rear.... Unfortunately many owners are advised to replace suspension or top mounts.. Historically this does not resolve the problem. In the rear twist beam there are two bushings One each side. Due to the radii and longitudinal forces at the bushings they tend to wear one face away. Front side of the bushing> Rear side of the bushing> Testing them for wear is difficult since they are captive within the beam... Unfortunately most places test for play with the wheels raised. For the twist beam this will not display anything raised. Wheels down and a prise bar between the twist beam and it's housing will show the play. Hope this helps......
