Tango
Yep noise and cost of manufacture.... That said both the S2000 and the Civic type-r both have silent timing chain systems ... Honda rock Can't let that one pass...the second generation Lexus IS also has a silent timing chain system
skinthespin
The chain meshing with the gear wheels is not where the noise comes from, its all the associated resonances such as cam chest panting that makes them noisey. Cant argue that Honda engines rock though! PS, the V8 will happen, just need to get Nikki off my case with messing about with cars, ie when Jays old enough to hold a socket he can help me............ hms
There is something to be said for 'older' engines. The MX5 mk1 and 2 use a belt, and the engine is non interference if it goes. (Only problem would be where it goes! Pulling out of a junction anyone!) Also easy to replace yourself, if not around £150 to do. Interesting thing is that Mazda have several different specified times to change them, in the UK IIRC it's 54k miles, California it's 100k. California legislation states the cam belt must last that long, therefore the change interval is increased for California! Same belt though! h
