  2. I'll leave the alignment as is otherwise the Hornet will be in and out of WIM like a fiddlers elbow. One of the reasons for doing the sprinting is to learn more and improve my driving skills. I'll watch the current set up and see if it is holding me back. If it is I may then change it, if my skill, as I suspect, is not good enough to notice the problem then I'll carry on as is! I think decent results are some time away, for the time being I expect to be the strongest competitor there, at the bottom holding everyone up above me! I take it then that a 60 profile tyre is nothing to be concerned with? h
  3. guy that sounds like a a day full of potentual problems and one i do not regret missing but i am sure i will miss the time i spent with you chaps and the hornet when i was at wim happy days Hi Mark, nice to hear from you. Glad to say the Hornet didn't miss a beat, it's Lazza and I that were the most likely to break down. I think we both drove conservatively in the morning, picking up as the weather improved and the track dried. Condolences on your brother by the way, my thoughts are with you and your family. h
  4. I have seen a few layouts of sprint courses, Hethel, Bentwaters and North Weald. Straights with corners and chicanes, with Hethel having a 360 around a roundabout! So apart from the roundabout sounds pretty much like a track day to me! I wasn't going to change the alignment as I didn't see much difference between sprinting and track days apart from not being able to get tyres and pads up to temp in a couple of minutes! ...But then what do I know. Regarding the aspect ratios, I've never driven above 50 aspect ratio on track, my Toyo's with an extra 4psi and 888's 2 psi extra. I'm thinking that with a 60 aspect tyre I would have to put in too much air to stiffen the sidewalls and have the tyre solid. Am I worrying about nothing then? I am also starting a blog on my sprinting endeavours: www.sprintingfive.wordpress.com/made-the-decision/ Work in progress at the moment tho' h
  5. Why not? You've generated enough interest on here with your threads. I would have thought any of the kitcar mags would be interested. It's not your 'paltry chassis engineering efforts' (your phrase not mine, I'd settle for 'superior chassis engineering efforts') but how you solved the issues, used the lasers etc. Drop the editors of the Kit Car mags a link to these threads, they may be interested in working them in to an article. h
  6. The only spare wheels we have for the Hornet are 14" I am starting to sprint in the Hornet next month and am looking for suitable tyres. Upon recomendation I am looking at the Maragoni Zeta linnea tyres. WIM have suggested 185 60 14. I am concerned with the profile of the tyre considering what I intend to do with them. Is my concern valid? If I went down to a 50 profile I understand the rolling radius has changed so speedo will be out, not a worry, but how would that affect the alignment/handling. Which is better to do, high profile and +4psi to stiffen the sidewall or smaller profile and put up with any handling differences? PS Tony Jay was meant to be coming back with the Maragoni prices yesterday, haven't heard. h
  7. Lazza and I took the Hornet to Colerne last Monday. Short write up here on the Planet forum: http://www.planetmx5.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5542 h
  8. Well done Lauren. Great write up. Put together the full posts and re-purpose it as an article for one of the car mags. You might get some petrol money from them! I like phrases like 'popped the top balljoints off' I've never worked on any car where something 'just popped off'! Everthing for me is a right pain in the 'arris, the simplest ones taking the longest time! h
  9. I had, but work interupted me in the middle of making the post! h
  10. CIH! D'oh. At least someone knew what I meant! h
  11. How much does he pay you for this 'job'? h
  12. Well done ER. I'm sure the week will fly by and you'll enjoy yourself. Look forward to meeting you sometime. h
  13. This one troubled me...... As said i couldn't conclude the camber positions so the bushings are being replaced and i will calibrate the chassis again...... But i failed? If on the day i removed the ARB the calibration would have been unhindered Live and learn........ But then, wouldn't at the first bump the problem would probably resurfaced. Replace bushes and recalibrate is the correct thing to do in my eyes. But then what do I know! h
  14. I'm probably totally wrong on this as my memory... now what were we talking about! It's down to the relationship of front/rear ARB ratios. A lighter ARB at the rear than the front would provoke oversteer. (If provoke is not too strong a work) So if you uprated the rear and the front, the front/rear rations may have stayed the same/similar, and hetherefore no change on under/oversteer. You may have notices something tho' on body roll. Anyone feel free to correct me! h
  15. ... setting up our sprint there in 30-31st May Unashamed plug - click Sprint, tell me more! h
  16. Sherlock Bones strikes again! h
  17. Yes please, i need as much help as possible if the event is going to be as big as it looks. Finn will help out, I'll help out if I'm off that day. I'm sure any of the others that turn up will help if needed. h Excellent, thanks..... Would Sean < (spelling) be interested in taking some pictures? Sean, iirc said he would be bringing his camera. I will ask on your behlaf. h
  18. Isn't 32 a little high for the road? I think 26 is the recommended pressure on a 5. At 32 are you seeing wear in the centre of the tyre. How does it ride? At 32 you have stiffened up the tyre considerably so you are losing the compliance of the tyre, passing more of the bump for the suspension to handle. I have mine at 26 and up to 30 to stiffen the sidewalls for the track. (Pressure measured when cold). For me, handles great at those pressures. On normal road I find at high pressures that I seem to lose 'feel' for the road, and it somehow feels 'distant'. h
  19. Thats impressive stuff Lauren. Glad it's all coming together. Last time I welded, I welded my sock to my ankle! h
  20. Yes please, i need as much help as possible if the event is going to be as big as it looks. Finn will help out, I'll help out if I'm off that day. I'm sure any of the others that turn up will help if needed. h
  21. Does the 'cosmetic' central hole apply to hub centric wheels? h
  22. Looked at my camera mount tonight, it comprises of the following: Manfrotto Superclamp mount with double ball tilt top head. See: http://www.fastfilms.co.uk/fixed-camera-mounts.php Initially bought a Hague suction mount which had some bits on it and bought the superclamp when I had the roll bar fitted. Ended up with the double ball and a few other bits spare. h
