Now ive been an archer for a couple of years, I know theres another forum member who knows much more on archery than I, but this is some crazy (unsafe) stuff. I can see some elements of logic in reading into historic images etc, but you have to remember that the images were drawn typically by people who didn't do archery, so there is a possible level of misinformation and then misinterpretation.
