MR2 Turbo with Skittish Front End
Jap Devil replied to Jonmurgie's topic in General Problems / Discussions
Wheel size make a huge difference to the handling of the MR2....I was running 17 x 7 ET 40 all round with 215/35 front and 235/35 rear and suffered bad tramlining Changed to 16 x 7 front 16 x 8 rear with 205/45 and 245/45 respectively, had the geo done.....and bob's your uncle! -
Good idea, but isn't that only going to work if the "old" set are exactly the same as the preferred set, in terms of size, width, wheel offset etc?
-
A bit busy moving house at the moment...spacers will be fitted soon!
-
From my own experience, setting up coilovers is not just a plug-and-play. After the initial installation they need to settle for a couple hundred miles, remeasured, adjusted and then settle again. After that you'll need to check the geometry and maybe even do some more adjusting until your right is right for you.

I'm fairly sure you can fit a 195/45 on this rim Nope I was wrong - 6.5" minimum width for 195/45 Try here, about 1/2 way down the page, Rim-Width calculator: CarBible

Some of the stuff that Tony has been posting - Over/understeer, scrub deserves to be put into a knowledgebase - how about creating one?

Do you feel to much power in truth is a bad thing..... i like you would go for the maximum possible but it makes you wonder when even experienced people like yourself can be bittern what would happen it it were one of the Max power boys on a 'cruse trip' Not at all! 300bhp from a car that doesn't weigh 1300Kg comes in very handy sometimes

I remember almost poohing my pants the time I took the Tubby out for a test drive - It was a cold November morning and there must have been some frost on the gound. I was doing no more than 30mph on a rural Nothamptonshire lane and gave the throttle a boot to see how the turbo spooled up. Instantly the back end shot out to the left and I was heading for the hedge! I managed to steer into the slide and corrected but not before I was on the grass verge Fortunately there was no contact with anything other than the grass, but it taught me to treat this powerful car with a bit more respect!

1) Width 2) aspect ratio, ie width compared to depth
-
I'm on 235/35/18 but of course, I'm as low as a snakes belly
-
Engine still intact?
-
As far as I'm aware, the only way plod could book you is under the "Construction & Use" legislation whereby plod would need to be able to show that the excessive camber was dangerous.
-
Oerrrrr..the Tubby

I have a pair of 15mm H&R hubcentric spacers to fit to the fronts, which will require the standard studs being replaced with the longer studs that are supplied with the spacers. How easy to fit?
-
Exactly....attitude is the name of the game. Be nice to Plod and he won't book ya. Behave like an a$$hole and get youself pinched
-
I never suggested anything of the sort. But I am familiar with a number of "motorsport" tuners where this problem does happen. The reason I mentioned Noble is that they appear to have a good record in returning customer's car to them with an intact engine.

I left my self open for you Bazza ....... my self = myself i like this game New sentence, therefore your "i" should be capital I. True, In fact an I on its own should allways be an I and never an i And take a further 100 lines for not using the spellcheck (allways).

It's going to be very difficult to get a picture of this - we only noticed it when the car was up on the ramp and we were able to inspect the wheels from below / inside. I can try asking the guys a favour and see if they'll ramp the car up for me again to take a piccy.
-
Doesn't look to be that low, looks the same as mine when it was lowered so it seems a bit odd that yours is rubbing on 18's. Hrmmmm........the car is slammed low (see the numbers on this post HOW LOW
-
Not personally, but they come with a recomendation from Tony Bones, the WIM Guru......

Welcome fella Probably the closest to you are Drury Lane just up the M62 in Manchester. Look in the main forum index for details.

Let's get an idea of how low you can take a car (within reason!) Measured from the inside of the arch to the centre of the wheel cap (mm) Car: IS300 Tyres: 235/35/18 Front: 315mm Rear: 315mm

Let's compare notes, I'll start a new thread
