  1. The average punter is believing what "quick fit" so called pro's tell them is wrong with the steering,i have told loads of people about WIM but when you start talking about castor....k.i.p and the like it just goes straight over their heads.I have a tough time trying to educate people (with my very limited knowledge) about the affects of a proper geometry set up and the pounds they will save in tyres.

I know how you feel now Tony.

Most people in a forum are wise to the horror of fast fit purely because the destruction is so visible... Mr Average out there is not so privileged..... it's people like you that try to educate (at whatever level) that make a difference..... have a look at this.....

Both of the front tyres were worn in this fashion.....and both had only done 1500 miles from new  the owner bought the car second hand from a main dealer and returned several times insisting the drive didn't feel right..... several times he was told 'Everything is ok'.... obviously not! sad fact is the owner was at the mercy of the dealer....then WIM became involved, suddenly all costs were paid by the dealer toward new tyres and the geo.... no offer of compensation was possible because the tyres did not 'blow out' so final consequences were 'hearsay'.

  2. About 120 miles for me then!,Might have to take a trek up your way when I need to then!

Would be nice... but not now?... when the new centre is opened it would look like 'jap fess', all the clubs will be invited and it should be a brilliant meet...

new centre !!   :D

when ? where ? tell us more tony :D

 'In time Luke' in time!....... :D

  3. Peter,

Your trade goes back '000's of years and is one to be proud of......tell us about al the times those hosses have kicked or shat upon you!

How much time have you got  .......You forgot bitten :D

    Eh ?

Peter was commenting about a position within here that is not 'car related', wisely he was made aware of the lounge....... from here i would like Peter to introduce his link (race for life) and i want the company's in the 'trusted centres' section to get off the pot and contribute toward this cause.

    Thanks Tony

Race for life In aid of cancer research

No problem..... this subject is close to my heart..... UMMMM before anyone clicks on the 'back button' remember in real life there is no back!...... only forward

  4. Eh ?

  5. Hi Tony, I gave the STS shop a call today and they said you were still off sick :) Will try again early next week.

    Regarding the story...

Drift practise day. We (nutz) decided a few of us wanted to go try drifting. Janey, Alice, Richard and me were on the "possible" list. Janey managed to scare off Alice and to top it all off, on the morning of the event where we were all suppose to meet, Janey was a no-show!

Anyhow, I did abit of drifting but realised my petrol level was low, so needed a small top up. Bit of extra info, I bought 4 different wheels down to burn the rubber on them, however I only changed the rear two (it was raining and I was being lazy). These wheels are something silly like 185/65R14. Now the petrol station isn't far, about a mile away and again was too butt-lazy to change back to my road wheels. I got there, filled up, on the way back the car swapped ends on me faster than I could blink and was rolling backwards down the road till a little barricade stopped me. Thankfully the road I was travelling on was empty. Of course there was resulting damage, relatively minor.

Now everybody at the event thought I went out drifting on the roads  and everyone here probably thinks so too after reading that. But no, I wasn't even dreaming of drifting on the roads. I thought I was being careful but I wasn't careful enough. :( It teaches me for being so butt lazy. :D

There ya have it Tony :) My rather disappointing story. :)

Disappointing no!.... i found it an interesting read..... welcome to the world of oversteer!..... sorry about today, i have 'man flu' (the worst a man can get) ask any woman :( ..... your car may be a little low.... can you go to the WIM home page, scroll down to the Lexus meet and then the gallery.... from here you can see the equipment in operation... i can lift the car a little 5mm but after that all positions would be violated and the geometry worthless......

  6. I only see a few cars in the Garage ........... come one, Bazza, Janey ........ we all know you have cars !

    Show em off !

i dont think it likes me

Teeeeeething pwoblems Bazza we all like you  poor SF has worked himself to the bone here over the last week..... i even allowed him a free kick to relive pressure.

    Notice the spin!.....

  7. I'll get me coat then..........

And i will bring it back!.... Peter this forum is different.... there are some very particular in depth areas that some cannot directly contribute toward but in time can view in times of need...

The Lounge is for all unrelated topics and i think it will become very busy, both Scarface and i understand there is more to life than just cars..... more important things like the 'Race for Life'....

Peter bring your link in and lets hope we can make some money for the cause.

    Chemix!

    Drury Lane!

    STS!.... forget STS

Corporate donations are tax deductible

  8. The rear braking is adjusted automatically by the limiter valve in reply to load.... so if the car is lowered or the coil rate is changed from stock wouldn't the compensator need adjusting? if yes does anyone know how to measure this, and at what increment?

  9. I came up with the dampening settings really just by experimenting with the adjusters to give the optimum ride.

I think that the differences are as a result of the weight distribution. Remember that the MR2 is less than 1,300Kg and has almost perfect weight distribution front/rear (48/52%), whereas the fat IS comes in at almost 2 tonnes and is front-heavy.

As far as I can fathom out, the knock comes when the piston either tops or bottoms out, which suggests that there is an optimum ride height for a given car on a given coilover where the piston sits somewhere in the middle of the dampener. Does this make sense?

Yes..... and it explains why when you alter one side of the car the transfer adds load elsewhere so the knock continues...were does it end?

  10. The first set of coils I fitted (Apexi's) to the IS were a real nightmare - poor ride quality and knock knock bloody knock all the time. If I managed to cure the knock on the front offside it would reappear on the rear nearside!

The HKS Hipermax RS coils I now have on the IS are perfect - awesome ride quality and quiet. I have the dampening set to 100% on the front and to 75% at the rear. 100% at the rear is just too hard!

Likewise, the TRD coils I have on the MR2 are just fine, dampening set to 80% at the front and 60% at the rear. Very easy to adjust the ride height too

The 'knock' seems to be a common complaint on most coilovers, do you know why?... what's causes the noise?

If i were to spend £1000 on a set and it made the car sound like a 'brass band' i would not be at all happy.

Also the damping ratio at 100/75 on the IS.. is very different to the 80/60 on the MR2 is this due to engine position or something else?

  11. I mean mods like forced induction - supercharger & turbo related issues, Q/A's etc. Not directly geometry related but which have an effect on braking & suspension.

I think this is a very good idea!... it would be wise to support the evolution of the car since this does include suspension and ultimately Geometry... Engine modifications must then require progressive development in sway bars, adjustable drop links, coil rates, strut braces and so on.

Scarface can we act on this suggestion.

  12. Hum.....Might be able to do something here

Indeed  you are well aware my understanding of coilovers 'the set-up' is somewhat...... limited

In explanation my work has been to recover the consequence not fit the product.

Neil you have worked with me in this area many times, i personally feel a one-to-one session in the new centre would complete my understanding, but other people without that privilege would value your guidance.

  13. Would have thought that the method described would flush all fluid as the pipe being removed is the return to the reservoir. The fluid must circulate round the system and then into the catch tank.

Now that makes sense.. i assume then it's a simple case of removing the return feed, and keep topping up the reservoir.... but do you need to turn the steering left and right during the process?

  14. Balance is everything between rate and reaction.....method is an art!

Setting the coils commands understanding, even i struggle with this one, any education here would be welcomed!

  15.

OMG Janey, you remember from December eh..?? loooool! At least I showed up along with Richard!!! You bailed and scared off Alice! That cut the nutz team down by half! I'm ashamed to turn up to another drift uk practise event in case I bump into the same people from that day!! loool!

I'm NEVER gonna live it down!

:P I will come with you next time & you can hide behind me

    Care to share?

  16. Tony i have searched under my car for bleed valves....but there are none so its bazzas way or the highway.

Well if this is true...sobeit....but i am not satisfied.......

We all know there are deliberate methods to replace fluids within the car, albeit oil or radiator.... the steering fluid has a 'use by date' so i assume there is a method to renew (all) the fluid not just the reservoir.....see my point!

  17. The new??? WIM centre - are STS moving then???

....or are you going it alone?

STS is closing/moving by August...... whatever i will not be part of the move!...team LOC have helped me develop my own interests in an area i understand... if i have to go anywhere i will go it alone..... not literally but in the format that endorses all you can see in wim!

  18. An IS200 had real problems with the steering not returning when deviated to the right...Geo was set and ok... tyres and suspension were checked and ok.....baffled i suggested the power steering fluid should be 'flushed'... the car went into Lexus and they did the deed.... now the problem has gone :o ..steering is now light and returns as it should... the cost i am not sure...

What i would like to know is 'how' do you 'flush' the power steering?... are there do's and dont's if yes what are they?

  19. And thereafter it starts to get silly power:

    Greddy TD06 turbo + wastegate

    Greddy I/C

    Blitz SBC boost control

    Greddy EMU

2.2 stroker kit (maybe) otherwise forged pistons/rods/crank

400 ponies at the wheels of a car that weighs less than 1,300Kg are looking very tempting! :o

Mike the only thing that will keep that on the road is an 'Anchor'..... and i bet you would have that 'up-rated' :D

  20. ....wow :D ...

this is my second home (1st being nutz :o lol).

the nutz peeps know I wanna drift but i also wanna drive the car on the road too so I need a compromise.

I'll start a new thread but THANK YOU for this section!! :D Tis awesome.

Good for you!... this site is devoted to every area that captivates Geometry... best part is there is no 'barrier' team wim are not in competition so evolution of Geometry and development of suspension is not bias....

For the record 'sleepyhead' most of the members here have 'Massive' understanding of all things mechanical.. this delivers a real edge compared to other forums.

  21. Last year i was asked to write and then position the Geom on the lead car for Drift Academy UK.... after some research i realized the positions are secret or deliberately miss-guiding so i wrote my own positions without guidance in a new sport..... in truth i got it very wrong.... mistake was i made the car 'to safe'.....

Never one to give up, silently in between all other work i have made deliberate attempts to monitor 'chat' in other forums. (one year in the watching)

What i would like to happen here is 'Drift talk' without the 'i know best' attitude seen in other forums....since even the smallest question was deliberate and doesn't deserve to be 'cut down'

One area i was involved in was Castor and how this will directly change the TOOT (toe out in turns) time and time again i was told....... it makes no difference blar blar...... a few weeks later there was an image of a car with a 90 degree lock :o (inside wheel) imposable you may think....

So from the bottom up :D Drift talk and associated Geometry is home here and i welcome all topics however small.
