  1. Isn't 32 a little high for the road? I think 26 is the recommended pressure on a 5. At 32 are you seeing wear in the centre of the tyre. How does it ride? At 32 you have stiffened up the tyre considerably so you are losing the compliance of the tyre, passing more of the bump for the suspension to handle.

I have mine at 26 and up to 30 to stiffen the sidewalls for the track. (Pressure measured when cold). For me, handles great at those pressures. On normal road I find at high pressures that I seem to lose 'feel' for the road, and it somehow feels 'distant'.

The new toyo's were higher than my normal 26-28psi - i can only put that down to being warm. Didn't notice anything untoward in terms of lack of grip or a bad ride however. I am totally standard - if there is less give in the suspension these things like tyre pressures become more apparent in terms of ride quality etc.. - certainly was on the 200sx.

I've dropped them down to 28psi cold again now and they are fine. The higher pressures on the airfield day were deliberate to save the edges of the tyre a bit and for the most part it has worked. It was all about having a laugh and sliding the car about so the 32/36 combo was right for me on the day. However i am complete agreement that for a proper track day a lower figure is the best for ultimate grip.

  2. "its not an exact science reallly is it - too many variables"

If you monitor the gains, over time you will have a reasonable template, but it does take time.

The template creation starts tomorrow at North Weald Airfield -_-

Pictures required or the cat gets it

Of course.. i'll see if i can get some vid also :D

    That's me boy :D

Files up in the track day forum

  5. Something tells me your tyres will be shagged by the time you go to France Steve if you're doing a couple more track days!!

Can't you get some cheap rims and tyres just to use for track use?

LOL - Its already a sore topic in the flat keeping car stuff around - me and my various car sh*t in the front room. i told Su i quite fancied doing a 'project' in front of the TV - didn't go down well haha. Maybe when i get out of here and i get a garage i'll get a set of lightweight rims for playtime.

Ok maybe i am being an optimist thinking i will get 3 track days out of them... but i know the wear rate is really quite superb on the '5.. perfect across the whole surface of the tyre - even if i was a bit heavy on the corner entry (on purpose to feel out the weight transition etc).

Will be a good thing to keep an eye on. To be honest i dont mind buying more rubber if i have to (its not as if they are expensive) , but if i can stretch them out a bit longer for the sake of a few psi then i'll take that thankyou very much :)

Cheers tone - its not an exact science reallly is it - too many variables.

  6. I've been on a few "Police road stops" where they capture several cars and we inspect the tyres for legality. The reason we attend is the Police have no bloody idea how to analyse the tyres.

Should talk the coppers into bringing the patrol cars in and on the ramps... make the best of a bad situation lol :thumbsup_anim:

  7. Hi All

I usually run about 27 psi in my old yoko's for the road and seemed to work fine. I just got some Toyo T1r's on and i think they must be on 32psi for the road. Seem ok.

I am going on a airfield day and really dont want to totally trash the shoulders of the tyres if i can at all help it seeing as i only just got them fitted and have another couple of track days and a drive to south of france on them later in the year.

What sort of pressure should i run in them to minimize damage on the outer shoulders and just generally? 34-36psi or more ?

    Cheers

  8. You can see in the first image that the impact was unremarkable, so why did the wheel snap like this?

It could have been a weld as it looks as if the the front end is cast and the back end is rolled. Would have caused a stress raiser or even weakened the material at the fusion and/or heat affected zone, so the impact initiated the brittle fracture.

Errrrr i don't think i would be buying a replacement one of those. Straight to Aftermarket methinks !!!

  9. If I were to use MKII top mounts on these on my MKI the drop would be in the order of 50mm front and 55mm rear, In your opinion Tony, is this too low for decent handling and performance using 15x7js

I am getting some of these fitted using mk1 top mounts and he'd told me the drop's going to be around 30-35mm which he also says is about the optimium drop to keep everything sweet underneath :smile_anim: Lets wait for the words from the master himself but i'd have to say i would have thought a 50mm drop is bound to cause a few problems for you with speedhumps etc at the very least without even thinking about the handling side of things

  10. Bearing in mind my recent droplink adventures - would it be a wise move to drop a set on when i do the ARB's?

To be honest i dont think i am far away from my version of mx5 perfection so i wont be going mad.. one thing for sure is i want fit and forget parts... how do these forfill that requirement ? Don't rose joints need greasing up and cleaning once in a while ?

  11. I use a superclamp mounted to the rollbar. Dogcams show some of the fitment options, but not mine! Note that Brands will not allow any sucker mounting of items either inside or outside the car. I'll try and get a pic up of mine. It's still in the car from last weekend!

I'm using a canon DV camera, HD and dvd cameras are out because they wont't take the shaking.

I also have an external mike, with pre-amp from Maplins at about £15, mic is back of the passenger seat so does not pick up wind noise.

If you don't have a camera yet, it's worth doing some research, some camera types experience a wobble on the picture caused by the shutter. Cannot remember what it is tho!

nice thanks for the info :thumbsup_anim:

I have a clean slate to play with - i am looking at a HD Camcorder with a 3CCD sensor (awesome for resisting vibration) and a mic input for a external mic and them get some kind of mount that will be held in place with my head rest bars..

  12. Video here:

Some of the titles are in the wrong place tho'!

Awesome :D - i am going to start doing a bit of this at some point. I know me and a few mates will be driving to south of france this year via some alpine routes. Really keen to get some nice footage/sounds of the routes !!

What is your setup to get that kind of recording - its pretty damn good with no vibration. I was looking to perhaps also get an extermal vgain mic and attach to the tailpipe also ? :)

    Cheers!

  13. You know whats even more confusing. The team that has obviously gone around and 'attempted' to rectify some of the bigger holes. I say attempted as you can tell that the repair wont last as its not a level fill, they havent sealed the perimeter etc.... They have filled one hole and there is another hole just a few feet away that needed attention, but they have left it as it probably was out side their 'criteria' or some other political bollocks...

how much effort would it be to sort these extras out bearing in mind they had already set their gear up.... now another visit is needed which will be months away.... during which time others are having to hit it.

I fear we have complete retards in charge... someone needs to go to town hall and give a few 'liveners' out :D

  14. wow those potholes are just as bad as the ones around me... i think if the photo's going to be of any use you need to get a ruler in there for a sense of scale...

I've not had a buckled rim yet, I've managed to avoid them so far but if I do have to make a claim I will be using a ruler and that days paper to show the date when I photograph them.

What gets me is that you can't not see them yet some people still drive straight through them and then they wonder why their wheels look like the ones in this thread!! :tongue2:

Yeah i agree a lot can be driven around, but why should we... they are on about safe driving but how can a driver be expected to be fully concentrating on the road ahead and whats going on around him when he is trying to dodge bloody great caverns in the floor...

there are some out there you simply cannot dodge without doing something wreckless like go on the other side of the road... i guess thats where some of these casualties originate from...

  15. And this ladies and gentleman is why i now get my tyres from tony as well as my alignments. I have only just stumbled upon this thread (linked from another current one) and this information answers a lot of questions i had, but never got round to asking. It makes complete sense and to be honest its rather shocking that tyre fitters may not have this knowledge. Its a small thing that if overlooked can have a big affect on your car !

Great insight mate - nice one :D

  16. Another victim of the road condition

An impact so violent the coil snapped.

    Jesus.

I would love to hear the councils answer to this question: If a car hit a 'significant' pothole capable of the above damage and the car veer off and caused a fatality - would they put their hand up to being responsible? would they pay out or feel any remorse for what had happened? I bet not - they would hide behind some kind of red tape.

I think the situation is disgusting. To top it off i see the council are keeping up with their tree planting schedule more than the maintenance of the road we pay for... completely lost focus on where their priorites lie.
