Looks like a good season, we may well still be involved in sponsorship but we have a heavy season linked with Team Green, huge advances in wim products and Watford Football Club to support (who's idea was that) :) In view of your success last season this one would be the right one to support.

     

    to get Wim involved would be fantastic :D

    also looking for other competitors, anyone with a Toyota or Lexus can enter :)

    its one of those things that everyone says "i would like to try that" but never does, those that have tried are hooked straight away

    its one of the least expensive forms of competitive motor racing, and great fun !

    averaging 10laps @ 2 miles

     

    so around 120 miles !

     

     

     

    wear on the inside would be down to the amount of camber approx -1.5, which is to be expected

    heat and delaminating on the outside would say not enough camber, which is detremental to grip and costs seconds

     

    so another set needed and more camber i think :party:

    they dont teach anything on your test :(

     

    I had the joys of learning to drive over winter, my instructor turned up one day in thick snow, gleefully stating this would be the best lesson i would have !!

    I believe now that it was, but at the time I was crapping myself !

    FWD is better than RWD as the weight is over the driving wheels

     

    thin tyres with a deep tread are better, they dig in

    wide sports tyres are useless, they flatten the snow and make for a bigger surface to slip on

     

    When you say the right tyres for AWD do you mean winter ones?

     

    So what about a RWD car that has the engine at the rear, would that behave the same as a FWD only in the opposite way?

     

    I thought my tyres were flattening the snow when I got out and looked at the tracks, they're 215 wide. They don't have much tread left...about 2mm from the marker so probably not enough to dig in.

     

     

    most SUV's for example have hi performance sport tyres which are next to useless in snow, think typical land rover with big chunky tread off road tyres they are good in snow

    my CRV has 245 wide tyres and are only a month old, they just do not grip at all, yet in normal conditions they stick like glue

     

    rear engined RWD wouldnt be as good as FWD as the steering wheels would not have the weight over them or driving force, RWD drive would tend to understeer, the disadvantages of FWD in normal and high speed driving becomes an advantage in snow

    its easier to pull something through snow than it is to push it !

  6. What is better for driving...FWD, RWD or AWD and how does each one behave on snow/ice?

     

    What is the best way to drive a car on snow/ice for all of the above?

     

    I have a good idea (I think), pull away in 2nd, don't slam the brakes on etc. After last night when I attempted to go downhill and felt the car sliding I kept stopping as I was bumping off the kerb :whistle: Should I have just gone for it, left the car in 1st and tried controlling it, gently braking towards the end? It is quite steep though and bends round.

     

    I'm sure it's my wide tyres as well and possibly the brand that was also making it slide easily. Before I started modding cars and had 14" wheels I didn't have many problems with snow/ice. Yet having said that I can't remember having it this bad in the last 12 years like the 2 lots of snow we've had this year...what happened to global warming! :smile_anim:

    they dont give a damn about joe public, a few hundred complaints will make no difference

     

    we live near a sainsburys who built extensions, extended and relaid the car park and just worked every hour the store was closed

    complaints just led to promises of stopping work which never happened

    even when the council threatened them they carried on regardless :rolleyes:

  8. My Toyo R888s are showing the same type of wear (without the delamination) so I decided to research the problem using my friend Google.

     

    The results seem to be that this type of wear is caused by the tread part of the contact patch (ie the bit between the sidewalls) distorting under the cornering forces. The distortion occurs because the sidewalls are very stiff. If the distortion results in a bulge this soon wears away giving the impression of a shallow groove worn away in the tread. Some of the R888 information I found referred to the "Groove of Doom". The cure is to increase type pressures and increase camber. The effect is apparently worse if the wheel width is at the lower end of the allowable range.

     

    I had found a list of recommended tyre pressures for the R888 based on the weight of the vehicle. So I set the pressures to 29psi cold and saw them rise to 34-35 hot. The Google searches suggest that the tyre pressures should be 40+ when hot.

     

    So I think I need to do this

     

    1) Get the R888 refitted so I can swap them side to side (and get a bit more use out of them)

    2) Change the alignment setup from Fast Road to a more aggresive track set up

    3) Use higher cold pressures to achieve 40+ psi when hot.

    4) Consider using 205/40/17 instead of 215/45/17 when I replace the tyres

     

    As always comments and suggestions are very welcome.

     

    would a 205/40/17 not have a stiffer sidewall ?

     

    pressure calculations should also take in the distance, in the sprint series we were running r888s fairly low around 22-28 as there was little chance of getting them hot so relied on more surface area for grip

     

    if its not wet you can always turn the 888's around and go non directional
