  1. Footman James only charge £10 to add agreed value but I think there are a few conditions. They have to agree the value beforehand and it needs to be verified by an owners club - a paid one, not a forum.

Hmmm, while I could tick those boxes I'm not sure what value the FOC would agree to on mine - in which case perhaps someone like Admiral is better because you can just argue with them based on other cars for sale and get a similar amount.

For a bonafide classic it's different, but for something like mine it's still fairly clear from the market what its value is.

  2. From my understanding that's only in the laquer or whatever top coat they use on headlights, which is why wet sanding is the best way to remove them. I'll try some polish on mine by hand to see if anything comes off but I'll probably get up getting some wet and dry. If it's not too difficult then I'm going to remove the lights and do them off the car.

What paper did you get Adam, can you get the multi packs with all the grades needed in them?

That's good to know thanks! Sorry to use you as a guinea pig but I'll see how you get on and then I'll prob give it a go too :)

  3. The rear window is pretty small and there aren't really any places to mount it. I was trying to see if there was a way I could attach it to one of the roll hoops but even then they're not in the best place to get decent visibility out of the rear.

If it was weather proof we could have looked at an option either outside the car or in the engine bay but it isn't sadly.

  4. So basically the insurance company's just trying to reduce their losses..... Does this 50/ 50 leave some sort of marker on your policy because it does suggest an element of blame?

Yes exactly that, both sides have blame so both sides premium can go up.

Can't see the video at work but the same happened to my Brother. He was in the correct lane on a roundabout and someone changed lanes and went into the OSR of his car. They wouldn't take the blame so it looks like it's going 50/50 and his renewal is £1k, tripple what he paid last year! :(

Bugger, reminds me I really should get around to putting dash cams in the other cars, it's crucial nowadays.

  5. There's no visible signs of metal fatigue so as much as i would like to say they missed it, externally there was nothing to miss.

Thanks for that Tony, will just get it booked in on Monday to get that sorted. I'll ring Merc to see how much they will charge for this, if it's reasonable may as well go back to them as their recovery service will tow it for free and they'll drop it back after.

  6. MB won't do it for free trust me.

It was in for a service a week before this happened - would there have been anything visible if this was about to happen?

They also replaced the brakes - could I argue they damaged it when the wheels were off?

  7. Fair enough, if that's 3 on similar Mercs just on the forum I guess it's a fairly common thing! Still need to get the car booked in to get it sorted - trying to decide whether to send it in to Merc and try and argue for a free replacement or just get it done locally (which I'm guessing will be a lot cheaper if they don't end up paying out)

  8. Can you get a close up of the exposed metal?

Looks like a manufacturing defect (crack) that has enlarged and rusted then finally broken.

It's an 11 year old car though, would the defect have survived that long?

Heavy cars Mercs and its a common problem , not expensive to sort either . Never noticed mine breaking to be honest , just noticed the car sat low , not that that low though

Do you normally replace both sides at the same time or will it be ok to just replace the broken spring? Yep the spring has dropped right down which is why it looks to be basically sitting on the bump stop.

  9. So the panel I have at the moment has either an OBD port connection (which I suspect is not working, do you know if the IS has power to the port even when the car is off?) or it has a direct battery connection via crocodile clips.

I was thinking of cutting the crocodile clip cable and tapping that one into the main wiring - the wires have a plug in the middle so I can disconnect the panel easily. Do you think that will be ok?
