  1. Are you sure Barry, has not asked you to ask for him :D

:o No this is out of my own demented brain Gord :D

How felxible is the rear to accomendate geometry?

Not sure Tony :o how flexible is my rear ? :o

  2. In theory no! your car has M+J+Y adding angular Yaw to the equation. The Yaw determines the rotational inertia of an object for a given rate of rotation. The 5 without the brace measures M+J+Y+C center of gravity and roll centre.

    Darn that Newton bloke :o

So taking out the extra yaw factor (which we don't need/have in this situation :o ) the gravity points and roll points (as far as I am aware the 5 is pretty centrally balanced) are unstable, & without bracing (generally without in standard in Mk1's, 2's & 2.5's) the car is liable to flexing and therefore possibly causing geometry problems

    Yes ??

  3. After watching the 1/4 miles today & looking at what the 'serious' boys were running on, and also some of the traction problems some of them were having - I have a question

    Take a RWD car

Put 155/70/13's on the front - Put 195/45/15's on the rear

What would the effect be ? Runwise & geometry wise ?

p.s I'm a girly and i am allowed to ask questions like this :o

  4. If the car wasn't so modified in the suspension area then the detection i feel would be minimal.. but since the car is so rigid... then i feel the retraction of the braces is very detectable.

'Twinkle' you are going to 'Duff' me up for this but i cannot help myself :D

The car has 'angular polar movement'.... The angular movement due to the flexibility from the rear allows the front Yew to rotate the rear outside of the expected polar transition. The weight transfer no longer supports the angular inertia hence the loose rear end.... :o .......... there i said it :D

In real life it is a little worrying that the 5 could feel so un-stable without braces..... i wonder?.... what made you feel the need to add braces? was it recommendation or just the feel of the drive?

Ahh so in theory: For example, angular acceleration is an axial vector. In classical mechanics, such interactions can be described by Euler's equations for rotational motion: M = Jw. (J - the moment of inertia, w - angular acceleration, M - external momemt)

So we can formulate the following definition: If an interaction results in axial accelerations, then this interaction is an axial (torsion) interaction. It should be emphasized that there exist no fundamental generalizations for the equation M = Jw in the modern theory of fields. Thus the modern theory of fields operates only with polar interactions, and torsional interactions are not taken into consideration. :D

    Now I get it

It is a little disconcerting that there can be that much noticable movement without bracing :o A friend has a 1990 Roadster with absolutlely no bracing anywhere at and he feels the flex when cornering and over the winter with a hard top on every bend in the road resulted in a creaking where the top was staying put and the chassis was moving :o

My car came with a factory front strut brace, I added the seatbelt one, then did the front chassis one & have now got the roll cage to go in & probably a rear strut & possibly chassis brace. Main reasons for doing this was that people pointed out how bad the car looked in the pics (roll etc) when I was drifting so in theory amongst other bits like changing the knackered shocks & springs, bracing was the next best thing :D

  5. For the last week my car has had no rear bracing (previously had a rear seatbelt tower brace on) and I have noticed a high amount of 'body flex' when cornering etc.

The rear end feels very un-planted (front still has strut & chassis bracing on) and although its not actually effecting the main drive too much, there is a definate flexing movement going on.

I am wondering wether this could have an effect on the geometry as if the rear half of the car is moving around in a way which as such 'doesn't seem healthy' :o

Anyone got any ideas on this little theory of mine ??????

  6. Ok so in a perfect :o world, what tyres would be best for my little Roadster - allowing me enough grip but enough lee-way to play on the twisties :o but reasonably safe & grippy in the wet :)

Or am I asking too much from some poor little rubber tree that never hurt anyone but have their juice farmed for our needs :o

  7. I had a bit of fun last year going into my work carpark - it was all muddy and wet and as I enter the carpark I have to do a right turn, I must have had a bit too much power down and made a massive slide/drift - it was caught on our entry cctv cameras and later the Safety guy made a big point about showing people and telling tham that was how to NOT drive in the works car park!

    oops

but my, was it fun :)

:D So in real terms you were making a safety video then Gazza

I put my foot down a little too much (touch of road rage :D ) turning into a road from a stop last week (new tyres & wet road) the back end slid out then back again, then again as I recovered it

Was great fun & I'm sure it looked impressive from behind though :D

  8. get the bbs's refurbed.. i love them wheels

    mmmmmmm

And luckily apart from a scuff on one of them (wasn't me B) )

Who did the deed..... name and shame Twinkle :D

Hehe...Whoever owned it in Japan before I got it :D

  9. get the bbs's refurbed.. i love them wheels

    mmmmmmm

I love the way they look on the car. (Pain in the butt to clean though :D ) Although they are a bit like 'marmite' some Roadster owners actually swap them for boring standard Mazda Alloys :D

And luckily apart from a scuff on one of them (wasn't me :D ) they are in excellent condition even the centre caps are perfect :D

  10. :D reads like a memorable experience 'Twinkle'..... with anticipation i have been watching the posts in LOC waiting for the picy's..... any chance you could give us a sneak preview :D ..... this dog 'Dorothy'?..... i have to ask?......... is this human or animal :D

LOL, you will have to ask Jason for the whole story, will give you a clue....it has something to do with Raz being asked if he likes Judy Garland :D

Baz has got a load of piccys ready to go up & Zee is collating all the others at the mo, so you should get to see some today :D

if you really wanted to go wider then you will need to go for taller wheels too

    195/50x15

    or

    195/40x16.

might be cheaper to buy a stylish set of 14" rims

    Cheers Dan,

I'm a bit torn as I have an original set of BBS's on the car at the mo and I really like the way they look. So maybe I should go for a set of 15's or 16's for track (my thoughts are on more tyre on road more grip :D ) and then I also have my other set of skinnys (micra steels) for drifting.

  11. Thanks for the answers guys :D

So in reality if I want width I need to go for bigger inches too.....now where have I heard that before :D

Hehe Melin, you can thank Tony for the story behind the signature, I'm glad your little 'un appreciates a good nursery rhyme, :D

Germany was wicked, wish I'd taken my Roadster too now :D (although I may have ended up in the armco :D )

The company was excellent I haven't laughed so much in years (well since JAE anyway) TTE's hospitality showed no bounds, and the hotel was tops for actually ordering take out pizza for us and happily watching while we sat in the bar & ate it.

There are so many funny stories to tell, like the tale of "crikey",& the one about "Faz, Taz, Raz, Daz, John from Croydon & his dog (possibly called Dorothy)"....don't ask :D

Can't wait for next year to come round :D

  12. Ok ....yes I am probably extremely thick, but then I am just a mere girly <_<

    My wheels are 14 x 6JJ H2ET 45, the tyres I have on at the mo (thanks Tony :o ) are 185-60-14's.

My question is...can I fit wider tyres on this size wheel, if so what ??

  13. Hello!

I was doing some fantasy shopping of alloys when I started thinking what and how the handling would be affected with different sized front and rear wheels.

What would happen if you have 205/50R15 at the front and 225/40R16 at the back? Similar overall height but the sidewall of the front is greater than the rear. Or more qualitively how would the handling differ from having say 225/40R16 all round?

You would have a 'Wilmslow' moment :D

Sorry :o I'm sure someone with some knowledge will be able to answer this one :)

  14. OMG Janey, you remember from December eh..?? loooool! At least I showed up along with Richard!!! You bailed and scared off Alice! That cut the nutz team down by half! I'm ashamed to turn up to another drift uk practise event in case I bump into the same people from that day!! loool!

I'm NEVER gonna live it down!

 I will come with you next time & you can hide behind me

  15. Just wondering if there is or should be certification for centres which do alignment etc. So that the tester has to prove that he can do the job properly.

I only say this because prior to visiting our Guru, I had mine done twice (supposed laser alignment) at a local tyre centre.

1st visit - My car came out of the centre with its steering wheel crooked, meaning to drive in a straight line I had to hold the wheel as if I was turning a corner  and the alignment feeling no better.

2nd visit - The 'boy' straightened up my wheel, did what seemed like loads of adjustments but driving away from the centre the car was all over the place !!

It is worrying that these centres are charging people but are obviously making things possibly worse than better. Also the trouble is unless you have it done by a competent person such as Tony, you will not necessarily know any different

What are your thoughts ? & Does anyone else have a total incompetence tale to tell ?

  16. Hi Janey  .... the height reads strange?.... i would expect what it reads on the box?....

mmmm yes I know it sounds strange  but the edition (S Special) came with Bilsteins as a standard extra which were lower than stock (which I didn't realise beforehand) so even though the Spax's are supposedly lower the car is now slightly higher as they are not as low as the Bilsteins were B)

  17. My Roadster originally had Bilstein suspension fitted, but was tired, worn & knocking

Most MX5/Roadster owners go for the KYB/AGX set up, but I deciede to go a different route.

The Bilsteins were changed for the Spax PSX 28pt adjustable set up (lowering 20-40mm)

(Ideally I would have liked to have D2 Coilovers fitted by was unable to justify the use & cost  )

I have found with the set up now (shocks set at 13 'clicks') that the car is far more 'planted' and cornering is improved, and with the adjustability I can set it for the type of driving (road/track/drift) I am doing.

Fitting was relatively easy although the springs fit on what looks upside down to the eye (writing wrong way up) and the tech guys at Spax were unable to tell me which way up they went !!

The only disapointment with the Spax's is that although the lowering was supposed to be -20 to 40mm the car now sits slightly higher that it did with the original set up.
