rooflessdriver
Spent a couple of days last week up in the hills in Wales to photograph some of the RAF low fly training. Weather was good, so there was a fair amount of activity This is probably my favourite shot : The rest can be seen HERE (Click the diagonal arrows in bottom right to go full screen)
scorps
Nice pics i remember being on holiday in the Lake District and every morning and evening they (RAF) would do sautes of low flying over the lake away from tourists about 100ft from the surface in the Harriers the noise and the speed was fantastic. rooflessdriver
I like your F15 shots most. Problem is, the Yanks don't quite get the idea of low fly as they don't drop into the valley like the RAF!
adam_r
, i never knew it was this event! i was in the lake district a few years back and saw one of the big transporter planes (4 turbo prop jobbies) being 'escorted' by a few jets flying very very low though the valleys, and then had a sequence of other aircraft flying very low / fast. amazing pictures going on there too
Rich
Some awesome photos there, haven't tried photographing planes yet. What technique and settings do you use?
phipck
indeed some very good pics there, must be hard tracking them while photographing because of the speed! I had a hard enough time tracking motorbikes, but then they were doing jumps!
rooflessdriver
Cheers guys. Part of it is in the panning technique and stance. I always stand feet shoulder width apart, looking away from the subject, then twist at the waist back towards them. That way you just turn the torso with nice steady feet. Then its finding the right exposure for the light conditions with a fast shutter speed. Some were shot at ISO 800 with a similar shutter speed. This gave a reasonable aperture around f5.6 - f7.1, enough for good sharpness on the plain with reasonable depth of field and blur behind. Was a bit limited this time as I only had my 70-200mm f2.8, whilst I have used a 100-400mm f4 before. Still pleased with the results considering the 'short' telephoto! I learnt my Panning technique with motorsport and just had to up the game and shutter speed with planes. The hawks can do mach 0.94 though they tend to come through here at a more sedate 300-400knots!
