adam_r
this is becomming a more and more common thing the way that pdf's work / higher performance deisels mean that oil can get in to the cylinders easier and cause this to happen. IIRC, maxda, honda and toyotas are having these problems at the mo
phipck
so it becomes a perpetualy running engine untill either it runs out of oil or something siezes? i notice a bottle of oil sat on the front with the hood up...... i wonder if that suggests a contributing factor? CIH
Yeah diesels run on compression and the heat the process generates so it becomes self-sustaining untill the oil is burnt away and the engne goes boom. Petrols can do the same ie; keep running with the ignition off and it's called "dieseling"
adam_r
its quite interesting though as 'runnaway' diesels have different traits.... some, like the engine in the above clip just run on max rev's ( not limited by ecu) untill the oil has run out. this then causes the engine to seize. bits can snap before this happens though. and other engines will litterally just rev up and keep increasing in rpm untill they spin themselfs to bits. (this can take just a few seconds in some cases)
Tony
Why not just bang it in low gear and stall the thing
adam_r
Why not just bang it in low gear and stall the thing if you catch it quickly enough you can do this. there are a few issues though. 1) you try trying to stall a diesel engine going at full chat producing a fair bit more power than it would develop as standard. 2) clutch may just break up on attempting it.
