Unknown brands - Yes or No?

Recommended Posts

I've had delphi discs and mintex pads on the front of the mondeo for the last 4 years and they've been brilliant. They will need replacing fairly soon though as not much pad is left but as I'm watching the pennies and hopefully won't have the car for too much longer I'm going to go with the cheaper brands.

Euro Car Parts have a 30% off code ATM and they do Eicher and Pagid discs/pads. These would work out at £30 for the fronts rather than £60 - £70 for the mintex set. Yes I know brakes are important but it's not a sports car so I'm thinking they should be up to the job...what do you think?

Pagid are ok , dunno about the other

They're the more expensive of the 2 brands so might go with those. I'll try and google both though see if there are any reviews.

Ok, from what I've been reading Eicher is one to avoid! Pagid are suppose to be the same as Mintex, although not sure on that. Those will come in at £43 though, so if they are Mintex that's cheaper than the branded ones. I'll phone Allparts as well and see how much their delphi ones are as they don't do Mintex.

we fit/sell Pagid ;)

edit: Mintex are branded.

I thought you might, I know alot of parts come from ECP. I'll try them then :)

I know Mintex are branded but I've read that they might be the same as Pagid, so either they make them and Mintex brands them or another manufacturer makes them for both companies?

I would say there is about 5mm of pad left. I know that's plenty but the brakes are becoming a little bit soft now and I prefer to replace parts before they're totally knackered. The rears need changing as the handbrake isn't so good now, you can't leave it out of gear on a hill! Plus they need cleaning up as kept freezing on last winter. I just thought it would make sense to replace the lot...maybe I'll leave the fronts then :D

Edit - Ok then it seems there is plenty of life in them, I'll save the £40 and replace them next year, the car only does 7k miles a year.

General rule of thumb is if the pad friction material is the same as the backing plate then it's ready for changing, which ER's more or less are at.

Do you mean the same thickness as the backing plate Pete?

Back onto the subject of different brands, I need to order oil and pollen filters for the Escort, Civic and Corolla. I've looked on ECP and they have brands like Japanparts and Guttmann, then Opie Oils do UFI and Mahle....obviously some brands have quite a difference in price but I'm not sure what to go with.

Mahle are the cheapest ATM as Opie are doing 20% off filters and I'm sure they wouldn't sell rubbish? I might take a chance with them but how am I going to tell the difference between a good and crap oil filter though, will the colour changed quicker?

Just get the stuff from the factors it'll be ok.

Couple 'o years ago I went a little loopy and spent money buying top notch fluids from Opie (the likes of Motul & Fuchs) but didn't reconnect the thermostat housing properly so all that expensive Fuchs coolant ended-up on the floor lol.

 You wally! Mind you it reminds me of someone on TF who were fitting a turbo to their V6 and filled it up with about £60 of Motul oil. Something wasn't fitted correctly I think and it dumped the whole lot :(

I've found out that Hamp are suppose to be better than OEM so getting that for the Civic. Denso make the Toyota ones but can't find them so looking at the K&N filters. The Escort will get whatever! :)
