He was one of the most famous "Hollywood Indians" but not actually a native american indian. I lifted the following from the web. "Iron Eyes Cody, April 3, 1904-Jan 4, 1999, was born Espera Oscar Di Corti of Sicilian parents in Kaplan, Louisiana. From childhood he was fascinated with Native Americans & aboriginals & married Berta "Birdy" Parker, of aboriginal parents. He started in films at the age of 12 & made over 200 movies till the end. He lived all his life as a Native American. He & his wife adopted several native children. He was honored by the Hollywood Native American community for his service".
